How to Quilt an Umbrella Motif

April 14, 2020

Good Morning, Quilters!

Today let’s learn how to quilt an umbrella motif!

(Though if you live in Minnesota, a shovel motif might be more appropriate.  Three inches of snow fell over the weekend!)

But hope springs eternal!

The Umbrella Motif

Today’s tutorial, the Open Umbrella motif is sponsored by BERNINA’.

Find the step-by-step tutorial for the umbrella at the WeAllSew blog.

This fun tutorial includes a video.

Using the Umbrella Motif in Quilt Design

The Umbrella motif is perfect for any floral quilt.

Stitch the Open Umbrella as the central element of a block. Or combine the motifs in a row to create a border.  By stitching every other motif upside down, the border is very balanced.

Another way to use the umbrella motif is as a background fill.  Stitch a loop line between the motifs to fill a large area.

If the design is not full enough for your quilt, add wavy or swirling lines to create a “windy” look.

The Closed Umbrella Motif

If it’s sunny with only a chance of rain…

You might prefer–the Closed Umbrella Motif.

Umbrella Border

Combine both motifs to create an umbrella border!

(NOTE_Both the Open and Closed Umbrella Motifs may also be found in Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3 (pages 128-132)

How’s the Weather Where YOU Live?

Will YOU be stitching an open umbrella or a closed umbrella this week?

Or will you be stitching a snowman?

Signed,

Lori Poppins

Because I drop in with an umbrella or because I’m Practically perfect in every way-LOLOL???

YOU decide!

Weather here in Michigan is cold and very windy. I believe they got around a foot of snow in the northern half of Michigan yesterday. I would need an open umbrella as we are expecting some rainy cold days. I love the swirls with the umbrellas that make them perfect in every way!

The weather here in France is marvellous. We have a lot of sunshine. I need a parasol instead of an umbrella.

Super cute — weather in Houston is actually quite chilly. I had to turn on the heat. No April showers yet 😉

Weather here in England has been really good 25C over the long weekend until yesterday when it dropped back down to normal for April. Lots of gardening done as all locked down.

here we have a Rain Day Festival each July 29. this festival is over 146 years old. It almost always rains on Rain Day. about 95% of the time. It is a small festival but i always wanted to do a quilt to honor that day. the umbrellas would be perfect.

Just in time for April Showers. Love how easy you make it. You are greatly appreciated.

Oh, definitely “Practically perfect in every way”! We needed the umbrella yesterday when it poured and the wind howled. Sunny, but cold today.

I would quilt a snowman/woman with an umbrella and some crocus and daffodils. Good Friday 70 degrees. Had a 6′ outside visit with son and DIL and grandkids, who loved chalk drawing on the sidewalk. Saturday a visit from son #2 and wife. About 70 degrees and windy. Easter Sunday about 37 degrees and 2″ snow. Mon a record low of 14 and a record low high of 34, and another 1″ of snow. Cold today, Tues and Sunny, but more snow due Thurs. Colorado is like that.

Could have used the umbrella on weekend. Sunny, cloudy, and calling for snow.
The umbrella’s are cute! Doodling! Doodling!

This must be the cutest motif I’ve ever seen and I love it! And just like some others have said, it’s “Spit spot” and “Totally perfect in every way”. It is SO Mary Poppins. Makes me remember the day (a hundred years ago), that Mom and Dad took their 2 girls into Philadelphia to see the movie – back in the days when people actually got dressed up to visit a theater in the city!! Anyone else remember those days?

Crazy me; I actually envy you the snow. We had maybe a half-inch this year and it melted within hours. It didn’t seem like winter at all this year. Spring isn’t nearly as delightful when there’s been no winter.

Correction: that’s “PRACTICALLY perfect in every way.”
