Tuesday Tutorial-The Closed Umbrella

April 30, 2013

FMQ Tutorial, The Closed Umbrella, Long Arm Quilting

Welcome to all the new followers of The Inbox Jaunt.  We are so happy that you are joining in the free motion (and long arm) fun!  Also, I would like to thank all who sent “Warm Wishes” my way!  It was freezing cold and snowing last Tuesday and today it is sunny and warm!  You are an amazing group of readers!

Before we start today’s motif, I just wanted to thank the reader who alerted me to the missing Sweetheart Border Tutorial–It is now fixed and ready to be stitched! (See the Quilt tab above.)

Onward…Today we are doing a little “Doodle Quilting”.  I started with a 3 x 4 inch rectangle…

Fill most of the rectangle with a narrow triangle…

Then stitch two scallops:

Next, stitch the handle by curling down and then back…

Stitch two more scallops, but don’t close the triangle—then stitch on the inside of the first side of the triangle:

Stitch three narrow loops, ending at the top of the umbrella…

Stitch down the side of the triangle (on the inside if you have room–otherwise stitch to the outside of the triangle)…

Finally, scallop across, back to the beginning and now close your triangle!

Now you can embellish the Doodle…

Tomorrow we will stitch the Open Umbrella and next week we will work on Wind!

Free Motion Quilting, Umbrellas,

Check out last week’s Work in Progress here for more umbrella photos…

Keep practicing, keep doodling, and let me know what you would like to see!
