WIP-Christmas Tree Project

December 12, 2012

Tree Project Free Motion Quilting --Tutorial Christmas Decorations

With just 13 days until Christmas, I am nearly finished with a few little gifts I am giving.  Just a bit of binding…it seems I am forever sewing bindings…

For this vase quilt, I started with a 22 inch square of fabric and drew a 12 inch square in the middle.  I quilted a 1 inch border on the outside of the drawn square.

Next, I repeated the one inch border–this time on the inside of the outer edge.  (In the next photo, you can see a few penciled guidelines to help position the motifs.)

I cut out a paper triangle to give a rough outline for the simple doodle trees and placed them on the diagonal lines…

After sewing the Doodle Trees (see tutorial here),  I switched to matching green thread to fill in the center and borders with a bit of “swirling wind”.

I still had a few more Doodle Trees  swirling in my noggin, so I made this sampler of trees (all different), with the same basic formula:

Now I have several quilts (to bind) while I’m watching my favorite Christmas movies…(more on Christmas movies soon…)

I found a tutorial for these ornaments on Pinterest…not in English, but the photos do the trick.

They turned out so well! I’m always amazed at what you can do with a doodle, some thread, and fabric. Just lovely!
