Twelve Steps to Free Motion Quilting

March 2, 2016

Machine Quilting, Lori Kennedy

Good Morning, Quilters!

One of YOUR favorite blog posts is The Seven Steps to Free Motion Quilting which I wrote over three years ago.

Today, you will find the Updated, Revised and Overall Improved—-Twelve Steps to Free Motion Quilting—with more explanations on BERNINA’s blog:  We All Sew.

Machine Quilting, Lori Kennedy

I’ve added more steps to clarify a few things, provided more explanations, and added better photos!

Machine Quilting, Lori Kennedy

The We All Sew post contains background photos of My Apples quilt…

I bet you recognize The Apple Core Tutorial!  (And the Pearl border tutorial…)

To create an interesting and subtle background, I used Sulky’s variegated cotton thread!

and of course, it was stitched on my domestic sewing machine, the lovely BERNINA 770QE!

Happy Stitches!

Lori

Lori, thank you for updating your FMQ tutorial. It is great to have a list to make sure you’re doing everything necessary. My only question/comment is, you don’t address the (relatively) new trend of FMQ with rulers on a domestic machine, using a taller foot to accommodate the thicker rulers. Will this be a part of your repertoire?

Great info-amazing how I forget steps in-between FMQ projects. Thanks for the link to We All Sew also. I do love your blog.

It’s awesome! Lots of info but quick to the point and great pics! I love that Apple quilt too! And the bernina!

How’s the quilting going there, Ness? Any time with the babies around?

Ditto to all the others who love your photos and wonderful instruction ! ! I recently did your red w white apple as the center of three vertical apples — the other two were paper pieced — it’s really “cute”. (I don’t know how to send photos)

    YAY
I am going to print it out this time and study it thoroughly
Lori, I am always busy running around town with the oldsters, or MY grandbaby Sarah, and I do read your amazing blog every day.
You are such a blessing to all of us

I have a Bernina 440. I never realized there were 2 different plates. OR is it just for your model??

There are two plates for every machine. You may have to purchase as an accessory. I recommend using a single hole throat plate for FMQ and for piecing–you’ll see a noticeable difference!

Great 12-step! Can you put it on your “link” area so I can refer to it now and then. Us “oldsters” need refreshment often!
