Star and Anchor Free Motion Quilting

July 3, 2014

Free Motion Quilted AnchorToday is Day Two of my “Patriot’s Challenge”. (See Day One:  USA and The Flag free motion quilt project and Anchor #1 that started the idea…)

In this work-in-a-series, I limited myself to one piece of fabric:  Robert Kaufman Kona in “Riviera” and one thread:  Sulky Rayon in pale yellow.

Working in series allows the artist to explore a theme and/or a technique in more depth.  The challenge is to keep the series unified so it looks like a collection.

Unity can be achieved by repeating elements.  In this case the background fill, the colors and the thread are repeated, with the major design element varied.

Free Motion Quilted AnchorWhile working on each project, begin asking the question…What IF?

What if…this free motion quilted pattern instead…

What if…this border instead of spirals?

What if…this central design instead of a star or anchor?

What if…this negative space instead of…

Free Motion Quilted AnchorSoon, you’ll be working in series…

Tomorrow:  The Eagle, A Free Motion Quilt Patriot’s Challenge

Celebrating Stitching,

Lori
