Let’s Visit an Art Museum-Together!

Good Morning, Quilters and Art Lovers!

Let’s visit an art museum!

When is the last time you visited an art museum? Were you on vacation or in your home town?

Seamstresses in Fine Art Saturdays

I love Saturdays-for a lot of reasons–like coffee and a drive with the hubby–but also for Seamstresses in Fine Art at LKQ.  I love searching for new seamstresses every week.

Impressionists LOVED Seamstresses!

I’m often amazed by how many artists painted ladies sewing, knitting or doing other handwork.

For more than five years, I’ve added a new painted or illustrated seamstress and I continue to find more!

One reason for this-the Impressionist artists preferred to capture the small events of every day life-impressions, rather than the idealized nature scenes of the Romantic Art establishment.

Be a Seamstress with Fine Art!

Let’s start our own online gallery!  Please send me a photo of yourself at an art museum.

If possible, find a seamstress or tailor and pose in front of her or him!

Send photos to Lori@LoriKennedyQuilts and use “Seamstress Gallery” in the subject line.

Please include:

  • Your name,
  • Title of the artwork
  • Artist
  • Museum and City
How Art Helps Quilters

As you peruse the fine art collection think about color, composition and line.  Consider how the masters used these elements to create their artwork.

Ask yourself if there’s anything you can bring to your quilting.

What about YOU?

When is the last time you visited an art museum?

What is YOUR favorite art museum?

Who is YOUR favorite artist?

Who is YOUR favorite Seamstress in Fine Art?

We’d LOVE to hear!

Your Seamstress who Loves Fine Art,

Lori

There are at least two paintings by William Glackens of women sewing. Just google “Glackens sewing” and you’ll find them. There are probably more.

My two favorite museums—Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam! Sigh. I’ve been to d’Orsay only once, the Van Gogh twice, but memories of the beautiful paintings still bring me joy.

I have just been to the national gallery, the national portrait gallery and the Tate modern in London this past week. Much to be learned and agree on impressionistic view of everyday life.

I have viewed both of your Renoir seamstresses at my favorite art museum, right here in Fort Worth, TX – the Kimbell Art Museum. I shall definitely take a photo the next time I see a seamstress and send it to you. I go there about every other month. Just love it.

When I was in college (the U of Minn, class of 1968), I came home one day and declared to my mother, “I LOVE ART!” to which she replied, “Art who?”

Love love love art museums! I know it’s not really painted art but my last visit was to the Dallas Museum of Art , Dior Collection. It was mesmerizing.
Thanks for the tour. I will be sure to look for seamstresses in print next time I visit an art museum.

In 2006 we were in France and happened to hear about an exhibition of Cezanne’s works, in Aix en Provence, 120 of his oils and watercolours painted in and around Aix-en-Provence, culled from collections around the world, to mark the 100th anniversary of his death. It was sheer serendipity we were able to get tickets. It was an amazing display. We stayed over two hours, and I wished I could stay all day but my feet gave out. It was only on for a few days, then the paintings were again dispersed to the four winds. I love serendipity.

I go to local museums all the time – last was just last weekend! Hubby and I always go to museums around the US (including Dallas/FTW) and around the world (including France/Amsterdam/London). We’ll be seeing some in Japan in a few weeks. I never thought to take pics of paintings specifically of sewing/quilting theme EVEN though you post so frequently that very thing. Duh! GREAT idea! I’ll post after my trips with art I spy on the subject and maybe start my own collection of this art theme. It’ll be like a treasure hunt 🙂

I’ve had a print in my bedroom of Mary Cassatt’s Young Mother Sewing for years. The little girl in the painting reminds me of one of my daughters. I have always loved handwork and my daughters grew up seeing me sew. Now all three of them are sewing and knitting and carrying on the love of working with fiber and textiles. I’d attach a picture but I can’t figure out how using my iPad.🤔

My last visit to an art museum was 2-14-20 to see an exhibition of the works of Hank Williams Thomas called All Things Being Equal. It was very thought provoking. My favorite art museum is the Crystal Bridges art museum in Bentonville Arkansas. The museum and the surrounding grounds is a work of art in and of itself. My favorite artist is Georgia O’Keeffe. I will be attending a lecture on Georgia O’Keeffe on March 5 at the Crystal bridges art museum.

My favorite art museum was the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. I visited there many times when I lived in Boston years ago (before the devastating theft of many art pieces). I also have been to some wonderful exhibits at the NC Museum of Art now that I live in NC. Favorite artists are Monet and Georgia O’Keefe. My favorite “Seamtresses in Fine Art” is one you shared quite some time ago: At the End of the Porch by John Sharman. I had to buy a print of this one, and it hangs in my sewing room.

Well, I am seeing this post after the other with you on the sidebar, Love the large photo of you !! We went to some places that had hanging art back in Nov while visiting son in Las Vegas. He picked out some places and took us on a tour. There was quite a range of subjects on his handpicked tour. We also went to the gallery show inside the Bellagio to see a pottery exhibit. The pics are all in my phone-camera. I really do need someone to show me how to get them into the computer,,,i know a cable is involved…LOL

Love museums, go all the time. I will look for sewing art from now on. But how can I add a photo to the replies?
We go to the San Francisco DeYoung and the Museum of Honor quite a bit (we are members). Love Monet and Van Gogh, My favorite isn[t fine art, but the one in my hall bathroom, The Quilter by Laura Wilder, a giclee print. My husband had Laura recolor her original version to match our newly remodeled bathroom. This link shows the original version, mine has a blue quilt. https://www.holtonframes.com/portfolio-piece/laura-wilder-the-quilter/
