I LOVE HOME BLOCK THREE

Here’s a quick video tutorial on Half Rectangle Units
WORKING AHEAD
While you are working on Block Three, you might want to start thinking about batting and creating your backing. I like my wall hangings to be rather flat, so I plan to choose a low loft batting like Warm and Natural Cotton batting or 80/20 Warm which is 80% cotton and 20% polyester.
I usually piece my backing with medium sized scraps. Because my quilt top is so colorful, I decided to tone it down on the back with a mix of gray fabrics. I prefer to wash my backing fabrics–I don’t want the back to shrink and cause distortion of my quilt if I choose to wash it later. Also, consider starching the backing fabric–it will help it slide when it’s time to…my favorite…FREE MOTION QUILT!!!!

I’ve used a variety of battings, but have recently discovered the Dream line which I really like.
I finally got to listen to your Sulky webcast. Thank you for sharing so much information. I learned a lot. Recently worked with rayon and had some trouble with it. Should have watched your webcast first! Now, to order your new book!

I love buttons! And I love having options for batting depending on the project.

I have only done some small projects (placemats, runners, little bags/boxes). I used Fairfield’s Fusi-Boo for the batting and like it a lot. It is a blend of rayon fiber from bamboo, natural cotton, and resin.

I love Warm and Natural batting. The quilt I am doing right now is going to be quilted with REAL WOOL ROVING from a lovely mill in Alberta. Very interesting experience! I also love buttons and have some vintage ones from my grandmother’s sewing basket.

I have used Warm and Natural and Warm and White for most of my quilts. I tried 80-20 batting on my last quilt, and like it because it seems to have more loft. I have an old collection of buttons – because I’m old! I put buttons on things just for decoration.
