I LOVE HOME BLOCK THREE
Find the Block 3 Instructions from JacquelynneSteves.com HERE
Here’s a quick video tutorial on Half Rectangle Units
WORKING AHEAD
While you are working on Block Three, you might want to start thinking about batting and creating your backing. I like my wall hangings to be rather flat, so I plan to choose a low loft batting like Warm and Natural Cotton batting or 80/20 Warm which is 80% cotton and 20% polyester.
I usually piece my backing with medium sized scraps. Because my quilt top is so colorful, I decided to tone it down on the back with a mix of gray fabrics. I prefer to wash my backing fabrics–I don’t want the back to shrink and cause distortion of my quilt if I choose to wash it later. Also, consider starching the backing fabric–it will help it slide when it’s time to…my favorite…FREE MOTION QUILT!!!!

I use and love the Hobbs Heirloom batts, but thinking of branching out to try wool batts since they seem to be your go to batting!

My favorite batting is Quilters Dream Request (very low loft) which drapes nicely. Question, you mentioned that you wash your backing fabric, do you wash the fabric you piece the top with as well? Thanks!
Sandi
I love to make bed quilts and I want them puffy so I like quilters dream puff.

I bought a big bolt of Warm and Natural, and have only really used that, except for the quilt I am doing right now, I am using Army Surplus wool blankets. My brother wanted a heavy quilt like they had in the old days. I had no idea how to accomplish that so wool blankets are my attempt.
Vivian Lewis

I like Hobbs 80/20 and Quilters Dream wool. But I bought an entire bolt of Soft n Crafty 100% cotton batting from Joanne’s at an incredible price a couple years ago (about $85) and I use that most of the time. It’s low loft, needle punched, scrimmed, and quilts up beautifully. PS I like buttons too. I have my mom’s and mine going back years and years.????
Martha
I use “Warm & Natural” most often (probably because it is a frequent sale-priced item where I shop!)
Pat in WNY
My go-to battings are either Hobbs Polydown or Hobbs 80-20 cotton-poly, depending on how the quilt will be used and whether hand or free motion quilted.

I like to use Quilters’ Dream Poly. It has a nice drape to it. And I love buttons. I have two jars of older buttons from my mom and grandmother that I go to all the time. But I love to put my new buttons in every once in awhile.

I started out as a Warm and Natural user, but when I tried wool, what a difference. I use it for the special quilts! I love the loft, drape and the way it quilts up. However, my go to these days, so is that my favorite?, is an 80/20 blend. It seems to have a nicer loft than 100% cotton and isn’t as expensive or hot as wool.
Carol in Arkansas
I’m too new to quilting to have a favorite, but I am enjoying doing a bit of free motion quilting. Not good at it yet, but practice, practice. 🙂

I love a 80/20 blend. I just started using it, and it’s my fave. I also love buttons! Getting quite a collection!
Marylee Elden
I love buttons! Don’t have a favorite batting, would like to try wool, suggests on brands to buy?
Pat V
I was struggling with batting until I read that you IRON your batting! What a concept. I thought that was a no no. I now use Warm and Natural 100% cotton.
Linda
I love buttons. Lori what do you like about Warm & Natural? I bought some years ago. It was hot and too thick. I put it under an ironing board cover. I make reproduction quilts. I like low loft batting.
