Although I have attempted FMQ over the years, I don’t feel comfortable with it and retreat back to the safety of Stitch in the Ditch and grid work. I enjoy machine applique, but don’t use it very often so I don’t consider myself beyond the beginner stage.

I’m a beginner at FMQ, but I would say intermediate or better on applique. I’ve been sewing since I was 7 (I’m 57 now! LOL) and I’ve mostly made clothing for myself and my two daughters (23 & 25 now) and my granddaughter who is 4. Most of the quilts I’ve made have been ‘stitch in the ditch’ or tied until I started practicing FMQ. When I look at the beautiful stitches you and others have done, it makes me want to practice, practice, practice. Everyone at the office gives me their scrap paper from emails, etc., and I’ve been needle punching away on them! I’ve become a volunteer quilter for Quilts for Kids, so I’ve been trying out my newfound skills on them because I want everything I make that goes to Children’s Hospital here in Birmingham, AL to be beautiful for the kids! Thanks for everything you do and for sharing your expertise!

I am probably an advanced beginner at free motion quilting and machine applique. I started out trying to use pantographs, but found them too confining. Free motion quilting gives me freedom to experiment and often those experiments turn into design elements. I use both my domestic and mid-arm for quilting depending on the size of the piece and am now experimenting with more “modern quilting designs”. I just purchased a new domestic machine and have found it makes the machine applique much easier!

I am definitely a beginner at machine appliqué. Have done needle turned hand appliqué for years and love it but the possibilities and variations of machine appliqué look like such fun, not to mention much quicker results. I’d call myself an intermediate free motion quilter. I mix straight or curvy lines using feed dogs and then fill in with fmq, which is so much more fun. I try to stitch without marking and improvise as I go. Haven’t tried Sulky thread yet but the colors and sheen are yummy.

I would say I’m approaching an intermediate level of both free motion quilting and machine applique on my domestic machine, however I purchased a used stand up HQ16 and I’m having to learn free motion quilting all over again on it.
