My husband and I have a long-standing Christmas tradition that we have enjoyed as long as we have been Santa.
On the Sunday nights between Thanksgiving and Christmas, after having tucked the wee ones in bed… we pour a little holiday cheer…turn on an old Christmas movie… and wrap the presents we have accumulated during the week.
We always begin with my favorite Christmas movie…..We’re No Angels.
Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray are escaped convicts from Devil’s Island who end up helping the family they come to rob. Hilarious. Very witty–and the body language is as funny as the dialog.
We also love: The Bishop’s Wife—The old one with Cary Grant. Cary Grant plays an angel sent to help a bishop and his wife, but things get complicated when Grant falls in love with the Bishop’s wife…
#3 on the list: Christmas in Connecticut with Barbara Stanwyck and Sydney Greenstreet. Another very funny movie with a great script. Uncle Felix has the funniest lines…
#4…The Shop Around the Corner with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. This is the movie on which You’ve Got Mail was based. Rather sweet…
#5…A Christmas Carol. There are dozens of versions of this great classic, but our favorite is the one with George C. Scott as Mr. Scrooge.
Did you notice that I didn’t mention It’s a Wonderful Life…It is not on my top five list…I may be the only person on the world-wide web to say this… but I hate this cloying movie–when Jimmy Stewart screams “Maaarrrryyy…I’ll say no more…
What are your favorites? I’d love to hear…

You’ve made me want to watch all these movies. Mind you will have to try and do it around the delights of teenage boys watching Myhbusters and other explosive shows!

As a former English teacher, I love “A Christmas Carol”. My favorite of all is the Peanuts one with Rerun. It is the “I Want a Dog for Christmas” I also get into any of the what we call “Cheesy” Christmas movies that are found on the Hallmarck channel. Yikes, I see you can’t underline, so I will have to use the ” ” button, though it isn’t quite right. Neat post.

That’s funny–we like to watch the “cheesy” ones, too–try to guess the dialog and predict the plot.

I’ve got see if we can find Christmas in Connecticut. That’s the only one on your list that I’ve never seen. I always have to see White Christmas before I feel like it truly is Christmas.

I love White Christmas, too…my husband doesn’t-so I usually watch that while sewing or baking.

No Angels is a classic!
But for Scrooge you can’t beat Michael Caine and the Muppets! The office mice are simply too cute.

I’ll have to check that one out. Can’t go wrong with Muppets (or Michaels Caine!)

traditional: i loooove ‘it’s a wonderful life’. cloying and all.
modern: it has to be ‘elf’!
although i asked for and received the full set of claymation christmas movies a couple years ago, and have never been happier.

Hilarious–did the claymation include Rudolph and Frosty?
I hear you are going to see the play “Elf” can’t wait to hear how you like it.
Make sure you watch You’re No Angels–It is better than Wonderful Life

How fun. Wonderful suggestions. Most of them I have never watched. I guess I will have to locate copies.

They are often on TCM as well.

I know I’m a nerd when I don’t know abbreviations. What is TCM
theinboxjaunt
I know how you feel about abbrevs…TCM is Turner Classic Movies.
