Finishing Touches –The Sunflower Sampler

November 22, 2016

Machine Quilting, Sunflower Sampler

Good Morning, Quilters!

Thank YOU all for joining me in the excitement about our new book!  It will make using the Tuesday Tutorials so much easier!  The first book (perhaps a sequel?) contains more than 61 of my favorite tutorials.  Because each tutorial has a number of photos, we were forced to limit the selection—but you still know where to find the rest!

Today we are finishing The Sunflower Sampler–just in time to get started on our Christmas projects!

SIGNATURE

If you are like me, not everything gets a full label…so I make sure to sign and date each quilt in FMQ.  Practice doodling your name first in one continuous line and then practice stitching it on a scrap of fabric.

CORNER SQUARES

Next fill in the corner squares with any motif you like. Either choice of thread will work. ( I used the thread from the center Sunflower–a solid thread.) I added a spiral with petals, but you could simply add a spiral or a wavy line.  Be creative.

THE ONE INCH BORDER

Add a one inch border pattern around the entire quilt.   I recommend using whichever thread you used for the Sunflower.  This gives the design balance.

Choose any border motif.  I used Braided Wheat.

Beginner Loops would look great as well.

Or use the Leaves we doodled last week.

When you get to the signature area,  make the motif a little smaller…

BINDING

Add a simple binding.

Voila!

I can feel the warmth!

Here’s the original-stitched on a hand dyed fabric…

The center of the Sunflower is a little different and some of the motifs around the flower are different…

Humph….. we wouldn’t mind if they printed/published an encyclopedia…”A to Z with Lori”. Every quilter and guild would need one. With annual addendums no less..
Guess I am dating myself, along with carbon, RE encyclopedias. My question today: For 61 projects in the book, shall we get 61 blank vase quilts ready between now and March? Or will preparation be part of the tutorials?

I love both sunflowers. Each have different motifs around the outer edge. You do such great work and I have really enjoyed your website. Thank you big time.
