I, too, am sad to see the end of Downton Abbey. (Though I hear a movie might be in the making?!) For those who haven’t seen any of Downton Abbey, check out your library to see if they have the DVDs. You won’t regret it!

There are too many priceless quotes to count! And he Dowager Countess had some real zingers!! A quick google search brought up one after another that I really like. But I’ll go with this one from Branson: “I don’t believe in types. I believe in people.”

My thanks to you, Lori, and to Andover for the generosity of this giveaway!

  • Perhaps I should open a shop! – well, my hubby looks at my stash and thinks that thought…

  • Joyce in NE

Carson: We must always travel in hope. Enjoyed the series.
    Love this blog.

  • Kaylene

I wasn’t able to watch as much of it as I would have liked. But, my friends always say about me, “she likes to be unpredictable”… Would love to win some fabric & get another project started. You are such a sharing person. You share your knowledge & now some fabric. I really enjoy your posts! Thank you for all you do for the rest of us!

  • I don’t dislike him. I just don’t like him, which is quite different.

  • Carol

“It’s good to be in love at any age!” There are so many wonderful quotes from the show. I will miss it! Thank you for a wonderful giveaway!

  • Marsha Bohannon

No life appears rewarding if you think about it too much.

  • I absolutely loved the show, but especially Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess Violet Crowley. “It’s the job of grandmothers to interfere”. Well said!

  • Said of the Dowager, “She Iikes to be unpredictable.”

  • I haven’t been fortunate enough to have caught any of this program. I would have loved it. Put the candy in the bag and no body gets hurt, What in a Weekend? Would love to win the fabric. Looks very lovely, never had tried that brand of fabric.

  • Elaine in North Tx.

    Lady Grantham, the Dowager Countess

“I’m a woman, Mary. I can be as contrary as I choose.”

  • Beth Conlin

Violet, Dowager Countess, “What’s a weekend?” May be one of her finer lines and there were so many.

    • Lots of great quotes, but i laughed out loud at “what is a weekend?” — Maggie Smith’s character is awesome!!!

  • Pat Hayes

“It’s a long time since I’ve been on the brink of anything. Except possibly the grave.” Mrs. Hughes on her impending wedding.

  • A well placed “Golly” has been a favorite of mine. I have heard several of the characters use it.

  • Carolina

” Measure Twice, Cut Once !!!!”
    I’m still learning this discipline.

  • Franci

“One should never admit a guest until the date of departure is set”.

  • Judi Creed

My mother used to say, “Everyday above ground is a good day!”

  • Jane Willie

“Sometimes I feel as if I were living in an H.G. Wells novel.” So very sad to see it end, but it ended well!

  • From Lady Grantham, the Dowager Countess: “Of course it would happen to a foreigner. No Englishman would dream of dying in someone else’s house.”

I haven’t been fortunate enough to have caught any of this program. I would have loved it, just from seeing the bit I have on Google. How very generous of you to share your good fortune! Blessings and thanks, Carol

  • Vickie

    When in doubt…….”doodle” it!

  • Dianne Duff

I think the writers gave the Dowager Countess Violet the best lines and Maggie Smith appearsed to deliver them spontaneously…she had so many good lines here is one I enjoyed. Isobel: “How you hate to be wrong.” Violet: “I wouldn’t know. I’m not familiar with the sensation.” (Season 4)

  • rochelle wiese

Lady Mary says “really smart people sleep in separate rooms.”

  • Stop whining and find something to do! ( personally, I detest whining.)

  • From Mrs. Hughes “Looks can be deceptive.” It applies to many things and crosses all boundaries of life. I loved this show. Thank you for the giveaway.

  • Lynne Fonteneau McCann

Violet: I’m a woman Mary, I can be as contrary as I like.

  • Nancy H

“I won’t take sides, it’s true. But I’m anything but neutral.”
    Dowager Violet Crawley.

  • Deb C

Most of my favorites came from the Dowager of course. Maggie Smith is a delight. One of them is “Is this an instrument of communication or torture?” as she attempts to use the new fangled telephone. Sadly, it is just like my Mom and a cellphone.

  • Kathleen

I will be lost on Sunday nights without Downton Abbey! My favorite: I have many PHD’s (projects half done)!

  • When Bates said “Until two years ago I was a drunkard and a thief” !!!! Oh how i loved that show!!!!!!!!!!

  • Season 6, Episode 5: Lord Grantham: “Golly Gumdrops!” A low point; there were so many!

  • Terri

I’ve never seen the show, but the fabrics are beautiful. Thanks for the opportunity to win. My favorite quilting quote: “finished is better than perfect”.

  • Judie

Downton Abbey was a delight to watch, especially all those linen clothes worn by both the family and the staff. Favourite quote, in context of the scene, was “I do hope I’m interrupting something”. by the Dowanger Countess. Her character was a hoot!

  • Tina Melton

I am a woman. I can be as contrary as I choose.

  • Mary C

“I can keep secrets when I want to.” And my hardest secret to keep….who is getting the next quilt that I am making! 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

  • Karen Rackliffe

“We all have chapters we’d rather keep unpublished.” (Though I grateful that you have published so many of your skills.)

  • Tonie Peterson

    “Stop flanneling, and get on.”

  • Karen Wahl

It is a Grandmother’s job to interfere .

I LOVED this series and am so sad to see it end! I have it on DVD and I, too, will re-watch it while sewing. Thank you for an opportunity to win Downton fabric!

  • There’s a difference between solitude and loneliness. (The Dowager Countess played by Maggie Smith). Oh, this is so true!!!

  • Shari K.

Violet: “You know me…Never complain, never explain.”

  • Kathy in FL

Vulgarity is no substitute for wit.

  • Teresa Rives

Edith: Now you’re happy again, you’ll be nicer… for a while.
Mary: If that’s what you feel, then why are you here?
Edith: Because, in the end, you’re my sister and one day, only we will remember Sybil… or Mama or Papa or Matthew or Michael or Granny or Carson or any of the others who have peopled our youth… until, at last, our shared memories will mean more than our mutual dislike.

  • Pat D

Button it, Granny!!!! by Mary to the Dowager

  • Patty

It sounds like it was unfortunate for me that I didn’t watch it — but I love the quote above (and I think it is very appropriate for the present) “Vulgarity is no substitute for wit.”

  • Margaret

Cora: “These days we like to take women’s opinions seriously.” Lovely to see how far we’ve come! The Downton fabrics are quilt-gorgeous & I would be inspired to make something extra-special if I won. Thank you for the chance! ??

  • Terri Tresise

I haven’t had the chance to watch Downtown Abbey. I do like the fabrics that have been inspired by the show, they would be a great line to win! I like the advice, “Measure twice, cut once.”

  • Joyce Calhoun

Vulgarity is no substitute for wit.

  • As can be seen from this list, most of the best lines from DA were the said by Lady Violet, the Dowager Countess (and yes full title is required)!)

Cora Crawley: “Are we to be friends then?”
Countess Violet: “We are allies my dear which can be a good deal more effective.”

I will so miss Downton on Sundays!!!!
