Good Morning, Quilters!
Today we have a little diversion from quilting-we’re block printing doodles!
Last week, I was in Wisconsin for a quilting retreat with my sisters and friends. (We’ve been going to the same retreat for over twenty years.) We quilt all day and late into the evening, but after awhile I needed a break from my sewing machine.
I decided to use my doodled motifs in a new way.
Block Print Doodles
Recently, I watched a Creativebug video -(Katherine Watson Block Printing) and couldn’t wait to make a few quilting motif block prints.
Once you learn how to doodle a motif, there are many ways you can use it!
First, I doodled the Scissors motif from More Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3 on to Speedy-Cut from Speedball
Speedy Cut is easy to carve–much easier than linoleum-if you’ve ever tried that!
I used water soluble red block printing ink to print onto card stock.
I couldn’t stop with one….
Next, I tried The Spiral Lollipop Flower–A Tutorial
(The Spiral Lollipop and other flowers are available in Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3)
Here’s a sneak preview of Tom the Turkey–a machine quilting tutorial coming soon!
More Designs Coming Soon
Block printing doodles is really fun! I just ordered another set of blocks in different sizes…
Pumpkin tutorial and Jack-o-Lanterns…
If YOU decide to try block printing, you might want to get a starter set which includes the rubber (linoleum), cutters, black ink, a brayer and an instruction booklet.
Block Printing on Fabric
So far, I have been block printing doodles on paper with water-soluble ink.
Next, I’m going to try printing on fabric with oil-based ink.

What about YOU?
Have YOU ever tried block printing doodles?
Did YOU make stationery and notecards?
What is YOUR favorite motif?
Which motif would YOU like to see as a block print?
We’d LOVE to know!
Happy Doodling!

I have the linoleum blocks i made in seventh grade … oh my, that would have been 1966? … and use them on occasion. The ivy corner border was ‘my stationary’ and the dove and olive branch the envelope return address. Guess I remain a child of the era. Over the years I’ve used just about anything and everything for inks – which is the power of the linoleum block – you can’t damage it! These old blocks are displayed with my collection of carved WOOD blocks from India, and they may stay there after I try this new stuff. With my grand daughter. Who calls her her signature doodle “Lori’s Lollipop Flower.”

Wow – looks like a fun project! I like to make cards and printing my own designs would be great!

Good grief! I remember carving linoleum during art class in high school (some 50 years ago). That stuff was like concrete and my hands were aching long before I was anywhere near finished.

On the bottom of Lori’s newsletter is an unsubscribe link. I’m certain that would be more effective than a comment on a post.

Uh oh, yet another thing to get involved in. Lots of your motifs would work great…I would do the mushrooms and one of your sun motifs for sure! Look forward to seeing your results when you do the block printing on fabric.

Do you use a bench hook?
