Which Foot? A Machine Quilting Quick Tip

February 27, 2017

Good Morning, Quilters!

For most of my quilting, my favorite BERNINA foot is the #24 Free Motion Embroider foot.  I like it because it is open-toed and off set which allows the greatest visibility.

However, when stitching around this cross-stitch blanket,  the open toe acted like a hook–frequently getting caught in the stitches!

Machine Quilting Presser Feet

I found the #9 Darning Foot worked much better on this quilt.

I also use the #9 foot when I am stitching around hand appliqué–as the #24 foot tends to hook itself into appliqué as well.

So if YOU are getting “hooked” on quilted embellishments–try a closed foot instead.

Be sure to check out your local BERNINA dealer for the Foot of the Month–the February special is the Needle Punch Set…

Squeal-squeal!

Lori

Thanks for the tip Lori. I have never used my closed foot but am planning a quilt using many old stitcheries and embroidering. This is good to know. Love, love your work and just recently bought your Craftsy class. So informative and love that I can watch it over and over!! Thank you!!

I have also used the Bernina #29 foot for FMQ on a textured fabric (such as the cross-stitch you mention, or even something with lots of seam joins). It is clear, has a wider opening to accommodate zig-zag FMQ, and uses a rim to more easily glide up and over height variances or loopy threads.

I use #29 too for all my free motion quilting

Good point although I always use my #9! I find that I see just fine with it being a closed foot.

Has anyone tried the new ruler foot? I’m really anxious to try it bit a little worried about being able to hold it in place without it slipping.

I meant hold the ruler in place, sorry.

I got mine in January and have only used it a little, but I love it. Its like FM – gotta play with it to understand it. At Bernina club they told us to put the little non slip stickers on the bottom, or even rolled up painters tape – which is what I did. However, the Bernina tray table on machine slopes down at the edge. So I purchased a flat table insert that fits my sewing table.

Today’s tip was just what I needed – I have a note about these feet to ask about at the quilt store. I did a little darning with the #24. My old Bernina had a #9 and the small hoop, and I think my repairs were less puckery. I will get a #9 for my newer machine.

Since I’m just teaching myself free motion (with your wonderful tutorials, Lori!) I have ONLY used my old darning foot — did a full size quilt with it last year. And I keep getting better, so it must be OK! I plan to get the open toed offset foot, but somehow I keep forgetting… LOL

Thanks Michele, that sounds like it would be very helpful…

Michelle, Have you considered the Grip Strips from Guideline4Quilting.com? They’re clear, repositionable, removable, don’t raise the height of your ruler & make the surface grip — really!

I love them too–only used them on regular rulers so far

I use a clear plastic closed quilting foot for all of my fmquilting. I think it’s #290 . A bernina foot. glides over everything and the hoop is small and clear so I can see how close I’m getting to things I want to avoid.

Patsy Thompson advertises a new clear acrylic quilting foot at her website–for high, medium, and low-shank machines. I am ordering one soon….

I am 74 and I started quilting in my 50’s. I didn’t know one was supposed to use the embroidery foot for applique. One is never too old to learn!
