Violets-A Modern Whole Cloth Quilt

February 22, 2017

Violets, Machine Quilting, Lori Kennedy

Good Morning, Quilters!

I just LOVE to see what YOU are working on!  Vireya of Weed and Stitch sent me this photo of how she used the Grid Pop design to highlight her beautifully appliquéd basket.  Check out more of Vireya’s work at Weed and Stitch HERE.  Beautiful!!

Have YOU had time to stitch a Violet or two? (yesterday’s tutorial)

Be sure to DOODLE first! (as always!)

VIOLETS ON VIOLET-DENSITY CONTRAST

This small whole cloth quilt of Violets is a good example of Density Contrast.

By surrounding the Humble Violet with more densely stitched echo stitching and swirls, the Violet is able to shine!

This small whole cloth quilt is stitched with Sulky Rayon 40 wt (white) on top and 50 wt Aurifil cotton in the bobbin.  (The combination works like a charm in my BERNINA 770QE).  I used a #90 Topstitch needle to accommodate the heavy weight thread.

To make the Violets pop even more – use thread in a color that matches the background fabric for the echo stitching and background fill=Thread Contrast.

Give Density Contrast a try in YOUR next quilt!

Add Thread Contrast for more “pop”…

Our Humble Violet deserves to shine!

Lori

It is still technically Winter. But yesterday from my yard I picked for a sick friend : daffodils, snow drops, yellow jasmine, forsythia, camellias, narcissus( sp?), rosemary blossoms and tea tree olive tiny flowers. All blooming at the same time! Looking forward to this year’s flowers, Lori.. I can keep the ones you pick for us.

I love your blog. I get so many ideas and the ability to go back and look at other designs you’ve used like the Grid and Pop (when I did not know about you) using the links you give make this one of my favorite go to’s for inspiration on the web.
    Thank you
