Tuesday Tutorial–Sailing Away

June 18, 2013

Free Motion Quilting, Sailboats, Long Arm Quilting, Tutorial

Good Morning, Quilters!  Welcome back to Tutorial Tuesday!  The weather is perfect for sailing, so let’s stitch a regatta!

I know a lot of you are Pinners on Pinterest, so I thought I’d make it easy for you with the photo below:  (I’m learning how to use fonts in Photoshop…for the font snobs out there–I’m open to suggestions…)  PIN away!

Here’s a story board of where we’re sailing…

Begin with three lines.  In the sample below, the lines are one inch apart.  These are our “rails”.  Guidelines to keep the row straight.

Begin stitching on the bottom rail.  Stitch backwards at an angle a few stitches, then stitch to the right–parallel to the bottom rail.  Now stitch the mast by sewing a straight line up to the top rail.  Stop here.

Next, stitch a small triangle and a large triangle.  Stop here.

From the bottom of the mast, stitch a curved line up the mast to complete the right sail.  Stop here.

Stitch the left sail by stitching a left-facing triangle…Stop here.

Sew a few stitches down the mast and complete the right side of the boat…

The waves form the bottom of the boat. Stitch a curvy line forward and echo quilt back toward the boat…

Stitch a wavy line past the back of your sailboat.  Echo this line back to the front of the boat.  Stitch back to the bottom “rail” and you are ready to begin the next boat in the line up.

Add more waves and different sized boats…a little sunshine…

This would look great on any summer quilt, baby blanket, doodle quilt…Add more sails, waves, wind, sun rays…

Or just stitch one…It would be a cute logo on a bag or a pillow..

Have fun with this one.  Let me know how YOU use it.

I have the perfect quilt to use this pattern! I was looking for one that would work and you have provided that!! I do not have the top with me at the moment so it will be a while before I can post a photo. But I will go ahead on a test piece and PRACTICE IT! Thanks for so generously sharing your designs and photos Lori!
