Try Something New

December 8, 2014

Free Motion Quilting, SailboatAs most of you know, I love to free motion quilt using white thread on a colorful background.

Last week, I spent a little time playing…

Challenging myself to use new threads and different fabrics.

Free Motion Quilting, Sailboat

This sailboat is small–just 10 inches square.

It was a fun size for experimentation…

Free Motion Quilting, SailboatIs there a new thread, a new color way or a new technique you’ve been wanting to try?

Give yourself a short “play date”–an hour or two to try something new.  If the idea works out, it could be the start of a larger project.

Happy stitching,

Lori

I was thinking I’d love to see an example of some of your designs on a full sized quilt, with prints. 🙂

Gorgeous piece above. Even some of the big name quilters shy away from using contrasting threads!

I’ve been thinking about that a lot, Andrea. I think the best way is to get everyone to show THEIR work on Flickr or through Link Ups. I am going to give this a big push in 2015. I think it is the best way to “brainstorm” the ideas…Do YOU have any other suggestions?

I can definitely see some possibilities for this one. I have some 10″ precuts in “ocean/water” batiks that will be cut into after the 1st of the year. I think a block like that one would make a great focal block for the lap quilt I have planned. ‘Playtime’ will have to wait a bit, though. (Something to look forward to……) Love the idea of “picture” motifs (akin to embroidery motifs) that are so popular with those who have the computer machines w/ the module. Love fmq!!!!!!!

    Rosemary B here:
    Very cute,
My parents are from Holland, it would be fun to try something like this in all Delft sort of colors like the tiles.
    Well done, Lori

I love the square spirals as a frame, and the echo lines resembling clouds, the waves at sea, very effective

I am looking for a brown thread. What was your color? I liked the light color too.

This should be framed! I love the waves and I would never have thought to use brown thread, but it works beautifully.

Awesome! I love sailboats, we sailed for years and years, but sold the sailboat when we retired, I miss it tho. So I need to “sail” away on my quilts instead lol Thanks Lori!
