Good Morning,  Quilters!

As I tossed and turned one sleepless night, instead of counting sheep, I  visualized quilt motifs. Each one flickered on my “screen” like a  flashcard.

Finally, I got out of bed,  cut up some paper and started doodling.

Soon, I was using my rotary cutter  to cut up some of my  watercolor experiments into  squares and rectangles.

Before long (the sun was starting to rise) I had a  deck worth of mini doodles.

Fast and Fun

While I  don’t recommend losing sleep over doodles, I do recommend creating small  doodle  cards.

Since that night, I’ve kept a few  cards  and a pen in my pocket at all  times.

Motif Practice and Quilt  Design?

It’s a great way to practice motifs.

I’ve been playing with arranging them into wholecloth quilt designs. (More on that coming soon!)

Materials

I’ve had the best luck using watercolor or mixed media  paper.   I like the heavy weight for arranging and re-arranging.

I have a stack of  very inexpert  watercolors I’ve made over the  last few years. I had a great time cutting them into little squares.  In most  cases the  cutting alone  was a  big improvement-LOL!

If  you want to add  a  little color to your doodles, start with watercolor.

I like black Flair pens and Staedtler  (.5)  pigment liners  for the dark line they create.

If you need inspiration—I  think  you’ll love  my motif books…
