Good Morning, Quilters!
I’m so excited to be one of the block designers for The Splendid Sampler 2
Quilting begins today!
What is the Splendid Sampler 2?
The Splendid Sampler 2 is a HUGE quilt-a-long featuring six inch blocks designed by 80 quilt designers.
Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson organized the first Splendid Sampler more than a year ago and it was such a huge success that they agreed to do it again!
How does the Splendid Sampler 2 work?
Every Thursday for the next several months, a new FREE pattern will be offered HERE at The Splendid Sampler website. Quilters from all of the world will participate by stitching blocks and sharing their work.
Each week, one designer and their block will be featured and all 80 designers will offer tips, techniques and color suggestions on their websites.
It’s a great way to learn a wide variety of quilting techniques from quilt instructors and designers!

TIPS FOR GETTING STARTED WITH THE SPLENDID SAMPLER 2 QUILT A LONG
For the first twenty blocks, you will be downloading a free pattern (later ALL the blocks will be included in The Splendid Sampler 2 Book). It’s nice to keep them in one binder. Use a sleeve protector to collect the pattern, any templates you create and the finished block.
Decide on a color palette. Choose a variety of fabrics from light to dark and a range of patterns. Be sure to include a few stripes, dots and small and large-scale prints.
I will be working with Allison Glass fabrics….YOU know I can’t resist rich colors!
You will need basic sewing supplies including a rotary cutter, mat and rulers–(I love my new OLFA Splash)
And if you don’t have one already, you might as well invest in a 6-1/2 square ruler. You will use it every week!
An iron (I love the convenience of the Cordless Panasonic)
You’ll also need a neutral color thread for piecing. Did you know, Aurifil 50wt cotton in light green (#2324) is Aurifil’s best-selling thread for piecing. It goes with everything!
You might also like this wool pressing mat recently recommended to me by a reader. I bought one a few weeks ago and I’m already very impressed (LOL)!
TIPS FOR STITCHING THE QUILT MARKET BLOCK BY ALEX VERONELLI
The Quilt Market block is created by stitching seven ten-inch strip sets. If you don’t mind a slightly less scrappy version–you can make six strip sets and use one strip set to make Section A and Section B. You will then only need to cut 12 medium/dark prints and 6 light prints.
Press all the seams open.
When the strip sets are combine, your fabric will look like this:
Be sure to align your ruler the right way! (Don’t ask….)
When you are finished, the Quilt Market block should look like this:
Woo Hoo we are on our way!
