The Splendid Sampler 2 Begins Today!

The Splendid Sampler 2 book cover

Good Morning, Quilters!

I’m so excited to be one of the block designers for The Splendid Sampler 2

Quilting begins today!

What is the Splendid Sampler 2?

The Splendid Sampler 2  is a HUGE quilt-a-long featuring six inch blocks designed by 80 quilt designers.

Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson organized the first Splendid Sampler more than a year ago and it was such a huge success that they agreed to do it again!

How does the Splendid Sampler 2 work?

Every Thursday for the next several months, a new FREE pattern will be offered HERE at The Splendid Sampler website.  Quilters from all of the world will participate by stitching blocks and sharing their work.

Each week, one designer and their block will be featured and all 80 designers will offer tips, techniques and color suggestions on their websites.

It’s a great way to learn a wide variety of quilting techniques from quilt instructors and designers!

TIPS FOR GETTING STARTED WITH THE SPLENDID SAMPLER 2 QUILT A LONG

Get Organized!

For the first twenty blocks, you will be downloading a free pattern (later ALL the blocks will be included in The Splendid Sampler 2 Book).  It’s nice to keep them in one binder.  Use a sleeve protector to collect the pattern, any templates you create and the finished block.Quilt Market Block

Choose Fabrics

Decide on a color palette.  Choose a variety of fabrics from light to dark and a range of patterns.  Be sure to include a few stripes, dots and small and large-scale prints.

I will be working with Allison Glass fabrics….YOU know I can’t resist rich colors!

Gather Supplies

You will need basic sewing supplies including a rotary cutter, mat and rulers–(I love my new OLFA Splash)

And if you don’t have one already, you might as well invest in a 6-1/2 square ruler.  You will use it every week!

An iron (I love the convenience of the  Cordless Panasonic)

You’ll also need a neutral color thread for piecing.  Did you know, Aurifil 50wt cotton in light green (#2324) is Aurifil’s best-selling thread for piecing.  It goes with everything!

You might also like this wool pressing mat recently recommended to me by a reader.  I bought one a few weeks ago and I’m already very impressed (LOL)!

And if you don’t know about this Spray Bottle--look for it in hair and beauty supplies or HERE--You will thank me for this one!

TIPS FOR STITCHING THE QUILT MARKET BLOCK BY ALEX VERONELLI

The Quilt Market block is created by stitching seven ten-inch strip sets.  If you don’t mind a slightly less scrappy version–you can make six strip sets and use one strip set to make Section A and Section B.  You will then only need to cut 12 medium/dark prints and 6 light prints.

Press all the seams open.

When the strip sets are combine, your fabric will look like this:

Be sure to align your ruler the right way! (Don’t ask….)

When you are finished, the Quilt Market block should look like this:

  • I pieced and machine quilted Splendid Sampler 1 and enjoyed being part of such a vast quilt along. The experience pushed me to try new techniques.

  • Congrats on your designer status! I stopped the first time around after 50+ blocks and they’ll turn into a throw. I hope to finish this time, but we’ll see. Thanks for all the tips, particularly ruler orientation when cutting the block. I never considered light green for piecing – I’ve just always used 2600 – light gray. And I love love love the spray bottle. Mine came in a set of 3, so one contains Best Press, one is water for the quilt room, one is water for plant misting. The trigger is so broad that my hand never hurts when using it, and the mist is very fine.

I don’t know why I missed the first Splendid Sampler, but am now starting the 2nd one.
I’m so glad you got the wool pressing mat!! If my cats hadn’t already expressed an interest in it (grabbed it just in time), I would never put it away! But I still keep it handy in the padded Steady Betty carry tote — great size for over-sized rulers, the Cutter Pillar Illuminated light box & cutting mats.

The Panasonic cordless iron has been in my wishlist for a while. For the moment, my Rowenta is still going strong & I can’t justify a new one yet, not after purchasing a Babylock Evolution serger just a couple of months ago!!

  • I wasn’t aware of the splendid sampler 1 until recently so I don’t plan on doing that one BUT I’m doing #2 !! I’m using Batik scraps in beautiful jewel tones!

Lori, your photo, ‘When the strip sets are combine, your fabric will look like this:’ does not look like the pattern.

Thanks for the tips. I appreciate reading all directions & tips before I begin making the block, and while I’m thinking about which fabrics to use. I like to know as much as possible before I start cutting & sewing. Not that I don’t make mistakes (I’ve made many), but the fewer mistakes the happier I feel. I didn’t know about the first Sampler quilt, so I’m excited to be doing this one; and to learn some new techniques & sewing skills. I love this first block. And look forward to discovering the next 99 to come. Cheers to SS2 quilt. Can’t wait to see my finished quilt!

  • HI,
    This sounds fun!
Is there any guide lines on how much fabric is required for this adventure?
    A fat quarter bundle? Yardage?
Or did I miss that part? >;-)
    Thanks, K

    • Bette

I think Pat Sloan had some info about fabric requirements posted on her site within the past couple of weeks. It was when she was announcing the start of the second Sampler.

  • Phyllis

I did the first Splendid Sampler that is now on my bed. It took over 1 1/2 years so I’m moving on to my UFO’s from years ago when I started with Craftsy.

  • Maureen B. in B.C.

I’ve seen some of the blocks from the first sampler, and thought about starting it … one of these days. Maybe I’ll actually do this one. Congrats on being a featured artist. Your choice was obvious. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.
I discovered Pat Sloan through the first sampler, and have made a couple of quilts from her ShooFly pattern to donate to our local crisis centre. The blocks were easily created, and very effective colourwise … a great use of my stash.

  • Chris Deering

Thank you for telling me about this!!
