The Race Car-A Free Motion Quilt Tutorial

Welcome back to Circle Month here at The Inbox Jaunt and another FREE, Free Motion Quilt tutorial--The Speedy Race Car tutorial.

No, you are not confused…it IS Wednesday.  We are working on two tutorials this week(and next) as we explore the Humble Circle…

Yesterday, we worked on Dots and Dashes.  I hope you had time to practice.  Today, our pit crew is going to put Dots and Dashes to work.

THE RACE CAR TUTORIAL

Begin by drawing a rectangle 4 inches wide by 3 inches.

Add a second line, 1/2 inch above the bottom line.

Begin stitching on this line.

Stitch a dash, dot, dash, dot, dash….EASY!

The Race Car-A Free Motion Quilt TutorialNext curve up and around to make the front fender–about 1/2 inch below the top line

Curve down and back up to create the “seat” of the race car.

The Race Car-A Free Motion Quilt TutorialThen curve back down to close the car… Perfect and SPEEDY!

This simple car stands alone.  No further embellishment is needed…Echo stitch the bottom of the car and begin another car…(NOT SHOWN)

The Race Car-A Free Motion Quilt TutorialFor a “souped up” car…Stitch next to the first “dash” into the wheel of the car.

The Race Car-A Free Motion Quilt Tutorial

Add a star inside the wheel, then stitch out of the wheel and around the top of the back wheel and into the front tire…

The Race Car-A Free Motion Quilt TutorialStitch a star in the front wheel, then stitch over the front wheel and echo stitch the front of the car, adding a racing stripe if desired.  Continue echo stitching until you reach the car seat.

The Race Car-A Free Motion Quilt TutorialAdd a steering wheel, then continue echo-stitching…

Add a number and some “exhaust”…

Plain or “souped”….A SPEEDY RACE CAR sure to please…

The Race Car-A Free Motion Quilt Tutorial

Have fun!…Add your child’s name or his favorite number…Write a message in the “exhaust”…

Keep doodling, keep practicing circles…

Two more circle tutorials next week…

And oodles of more fun this week…

Stay tuned.

Lori

This is so cute! I’ve been afraid to do free motion. You make it so easy, not at all like the books on the market. Thank you so much,.
