Good Morning, Quilters!
I’m back from an exhilarating and exhausting week at the Craftsy studios in Denver…where you work hard and play hard, laugh a lot and work hard…
There were “Takes” and “re-takes” and “re-takes of the re-takes” (usually caused by laughing)
Anyway, it was a ton of fun (did I mention hard work) and I will be telling you a lot more in the next few days and weeks.
The second class (with emphasis on doodling and developing YOUR own motif library) will be ready around mid-April!!!
THANK YOU
I really want to thank all of you who have been here since “Hello, World!“…and the early tutorial days.
Your encouragement, kind words and support have meant the world to me.
Thank YOU for going on this wild ride WITH ME–I think of YOU every step of the way!
With that in mind….I have a great tutorial for you today!
THE MODERN VINE -TUTORIAL
Begin by drawing two parallel lines. In the sample below, the lines are 2-1/2 inches apart, but they can be any width that suits YOUR quilt.
In between the rows draw a very slightly wavy line–don’t get too crazy here or it will be difficult to stitch…
Stitch on the line a short distance and then begin the first leaf.
The leaf shape is fairly symmetrical.
Return to the center line. Try to mirror image the bottom of the leaf…
Leave a small gap.
Stitch a straight line stem and over stitch it back to the drawn line.
Scoot through the small gap–this helps you avoid the build up of stitches at that intersection.
Stitch up the stem a few stitches and create another symmetrical leaf.
Continue up the drawn line to create the vine.
Angle the leaves upward slightly and note that because the central line is wavy, sometimes the right-sided leaves will be larger and sometimes the left-sided leaves will be larger.
This give the Modern Vine an interesting look.
If one vine is not large enough for your border, add two vines with a different motif in between.
I love the Spirals in between…(I share a few tips on getting perfect Spirals in my upcoming Craftsy video!)
The Modern Vine could be used in place of rows of Feathers in any quilt!
It makes me THINK SPRING!
What about YOU… what makes YOU “think spring”? We’d love to hear!
Glad-to-be-sleeping-in-my-own-bed,
Lori

Congratulations on your up-coming video and being able to sleep in your own bed! Such a pretty vine design…this does make me think of spring. Birds also make me think of spring as they are singing up a storm right now. It seems a little early, but maybe they know something I don’t.

I enjoy looking at your quilting tutorials, they give me inspiration and ideas for my current and future quilting projects. Thank you for the time and effort you devote to fellow quilters!

Waiting for that next video release. Like this vine design and the way you explained it makes it so much easier to stitch. Home is nice after being on a journey.

Gorgeous design and great tutorial. Thank you. I’m glad you are back home and sleeping in your own bed. No place like home.

Yea, can’t wait for the new class! I just love this – I like that you said it could be used in place of feathers ( have not yet mastered that ) but I think this would give a modern feel to a quilt while the feathers are somewhat more refined. Love these.

Congrats on finishing your second Craftsy class. I am sooo looking forward to signing up for it!

Most definitely “Spring” (in spite of the ugly forecast for the southern MN area!!!)! And, again, a huge “Congrats” on the Craftsy direction. You will bring even more encouraging/skill-building to all!!!!! Blessings……………….

Can’t wait for your next class. You are a wonderful inspiration.

Yes, I think I can do this also. I don’t think I could have imagined I could do it before finding you. We always want to be better than we are and sooner or later we look back and say – I guess I did pretty good on that project, but we wish we would have done something better. Most recently, I am doing a masculin big square type comforter, but wish I would have chosen a better selection of fabrics. I struggle with choosing colors for projects on my own. You are such a blessing to so many of us. I’m sure your class will be great, like you, as I truly learned a lot from Divide & Conquer. Blessings to you and yours at Easter.

Thank you for sharing this design — just beginning a border and it might be perfect for it!!

We just had another dumping of snow and it is windy and cold outside (wind chill of -13). I have a bouquet of tulips in a vase on my family room table to remind me spring is around the corner….just not sure which corner but I’m looking! ? It will be a good afternoon for machine quilting – I’ll be practicing on my table runner. Wish me luck! With your help so far I think it will turn out well. Thanks for all your ideas/tutorials and gentle nudges!

I think I can do this one, and have a little confidence that it will turn out well enough to give away. I’m so glad I found you and that you want to help others on your way to stardom 8-). Thank you .
Blessings and enjoy Easter with your family.
Nik
Thanks so much for all that you share. Wishing you a wonderful Easter-time 🙂
