The Extra-Sweet Heart Border Free Motion Quilting Tutorial

With just ten days until Valentine’s Day, our hearts (and our quilts) turn to thoughts of the people we love…  There’s still time to make them a little token of our admiration.  Today we have a little embellishment you might want to add:  The Extra-Sweet Heart Border.  This pattern is the updated version of The Sweetheart Border we stitched last February.  (See HERE)

The Extra-Sweet Heart Border Tutorial

Begin by drawing two lines.  In the sample below, the  lines are one inch apart.  Begin stitching above the bottom line.  Stitch a small “c” shape, then stitch the left side of the heart.

At the top of the heart, stitch a loop…

then stitch the right side of the heart.

As you approach the bottom line, curve up and stitch a loop–this is the bottom of the upside down heart.

Continue curving up to form the left side of the second heart…

This is one of those patterns that has rhythm.  Once you get in a grove, you’ll be stitching and singing…

NOTE:  This tutorial was stitched with Aurifil cotton 50wt in the bobbin, Robison-Anton Rayon on top using a Schmetz Topstitch 80 needle on my domestic sewing machine, a Bernina 820.

Tomorrow:  A Valentine to my Mother–a quilted postcard.

May all your stitches be sweet,

Lori

I absolutely love your tutorials. Videos are helpful, but I really like how you break down the patterns, step by step, with the pictures. Then, I can refer back to them whenever I want.
I also like how you say the threads, needle, and sewing machine you used for each example. Have you had any thread issues with your Bernina 820? I have had mine back to the Bernina dealer four times for the bobbin thread breaking and now it has to go back again. Also, I was instructed to use the same thread in the bobbin as the top, but I see that you don’t. Any suggestions you have would certainly be appreciated. Keep up the fantastic work.

Hi. My sister-in-law sent a link to your blog 2 weeks ago to see a quilting tutorial. Instantly I was hooked. I looked at all the tutorials which are wonderful, and I also checked out about making a quilt notebook.which I have started. It already has been immensely helpful in getting my UFO’s organized and ready to take an active spot in line! (Got a top pieced in the last week!) It’s all so motivating and your designs are beautiful. Just want to thank you so very much! you are inspirational. Can’t wait to try the cute new heart design.

Until then, doodle the designs. When you arrive back at your sewing machine, the motor-planning will be well established and ready to “rock and roll” on any quilt!

  • Beautiful! Thanks for the postcard idea.

I always look forward to Tuesday’s post! Love the design! Was just curious about your tutorial pictures. You always have pictures of every step. How long does it take you to prepare and execute each tutorial?

    • A

Several hours. I first have to doodle a long time to find the best way to make the design a continuous line. Then I stitch each step. Photograph it. Process the photos. (Sometimes I have to retake some photos). Then I do the writing. I’m always thrilled to hear not only that you enjoy the tutorials but that you’ve used them on a quilt. Most of all I love to see the photos of those quilts!!!

  • Another fab idea!!!! Will try that one out today!!!!! Awesome tute!!!!! Hugs………

  • I always love the consistency in your shapes. This is a wonderful pattern for borders.

Lori, I love your gorgeous work. Thank you so much for sharing your talent. I have a question: I have never seen pins on your quilt sandwiches. Do you spray baste?

    • WordPress.com Support

Barbara, thanks for your kind words! I spray baste my smaller pieces and pin large table runners and everything larger.
