Free Motion Quilting a Valentine Postcard

February 5, 2014

Mom's Valentine Postcard005

Yesterday, we worked on The Extra-Sweet Heart Border-a design that will brighten up all of your quilts, especially Valentine-inspired quilts.

FMQ, Valentine Postcard

I made this little quilt for my Mother.   The poem is one she is fond of saying to all her babies (7), grand-babies(16)  and great grand babies (10 + 2 on the way) !The Extra-Sweet Heart Border Free Motion Quilting Tutorial

It’s a little large (14″ x 22″) to qualify for the postcard rate at the post office.

I plan to bind it and ship it off today.  I want my Mother to know we all love her A BUSHEL AND A PECK!

Hugs around the neck,

Lori

NOTE:  This Valentine was stitched with Aurifil 50 wt thread in the bobbin and Sulky Rayon on top with a Schmetz 80 Topstitch needle on my Bernina 820…in case you were wondering…

Wasn’t that a song? LOL I too am one of seven and remember singing those old songs (Daisy – Little lambs eat Ivy) while doing dishes every night. Somehow my brothers got out of that chore. lol Love your “postcard” for your mom! She’s going to love it too.

Very cute! She’ll love it! I think that is a song from Guys and Dolls. My husband sings it to the babies, too.

Isn’t it fun that one blast from the past can jog your mind right on down memory lane. 🙂 If there were more words to that song I don’t recall them..haha! Super cute postcard. I picked up a yard of a pretty Kona red last time I was in town cuz I knew you were going to come up with something sweet for Valentines. Think I will try a quilted heart and border on a little mug rug for Mom. Nice work. :)!

Sometimes the noise level can be measured in decibels at our family functions…they keep getting bigger and more fun!

My sister use to sing that song to me and I have sang it to my children and grandchildren. Precious memories. 🙂

What a wonderful Valentines gift for your Mom. She will love it. How did you do the lettering so perfect?

    1. Lori Kennedy says:
      February 5, 2014 at 11:38 am

I use the grid from The Stencil Company to create the lines…then I use my best penmanship…

What a precious Valentine! love the idea and execution is great. Again a lovely inspiration. I “heard” the song as I read the words.:) Looking forward to stocking up with aurifil (for first time) on the next trip into city, I want to make a garland of 5 inch hearts, with quilting on each, for our 3 yr old granddaughter who lives hundreds of miles away. Thanks again, Lori, for sharing your idea and heart with us.

Talk about bringing back memories……this is wonderful and so neat. You are just the best for creativity, thanks. Never thought of trying to write with free motion. Your things look so good, I need to practice all year to even get close, but that is what your tutorials are for, right? Snowing like crazy here in Michigan today, looks beautiful and I think a day to sew…..Claudia

What a great day to sew and enjoy the blessing of a nice, warm home. Thank you for all you inspiration and tutorials. They motivate me to a higher level in my quilting!

Lyrics are by Frank Loesser for “Guys and Dolls”
    See http://www.elyrics.net/read/f/frank-loesser-lyrics/a-bushel-and-a-peck-lyrics.html

If you have a local high school that produces musicals, do go and see Guys and Dolls when it’s offered. Great fun. Loesser had a real knack for fun lyrics.

Lori I made it but I was a chicken with the border so I stitched the border in red so it didn’t stand out so much if it wasn’t so good. I’m taking it down this weekend and hiding at mums as I won’t see her valentines day, then I can tell her where I’ve hidden it on the day. Thanks so much I so enjoyed making it. chris xxx

My daughter’s in the pit orchestra for her high school’s spring performance of “Guys & Dolls.” I believe “A Bushel and a Peck” is in the musical but was not included in the Sinatra/Brando film version (what a shame).

It’s just beautiful, Lori. I remember that from my mom. Your quilting inside the heart is so perfect. It’s a lovely design that fills the space so nicely. And your penmanship is gorgeous. It won’t be too much longer when no one will be able to read cursive. What a shame. But your mom will treasure it!

I’m reading through all your archives after coming across your blog last week (and yes, time would be better spent practicing all of your amazing tutorials, but that will come!) My mom always sang this to me as a child and now to my boys and probably sooner than I’d like, to their kids! Thanks for your amazing inspiration!
