The Anchor-A Free Motion (or Long Arm) Quilt Tutorial

August 11, 2015

Good Morning, Quilters!

Thank you, Thank you!

Thank you for all the well wishes related to the release of my Craftsy video!

You have several hours left to get 50% off (click on the photo below!)Craftsy Video

It’s been so much fun to hear from all of you!  Some of you have even watched the entire video already!  Now I have to admire that!

In Lesson Three, I discuss dividing quilts into Horizontal Compositions and I stitch a little “Boat Scene” with the video version of The Wave, The Sailboat and The Sun.

Today’s tutorial, The Anchor, is a great motif to add to YOUR boat scene!  (Don’t forget to post YOUR photos on the Craftsy platform after Lesson Three!)

So in keeping with “Craftsy Week”, I offer:

Anchor FMQTHE ANCHOR-A FREE MOTION OR LONG ARM QUILT TUTORIALAnchor.LKennedy.FMQ002Begin by drawing three lines or “rails”  equidistant apart.  In the sample below the lines are 3/4 inch apart.

Begin stitching between the lower rail and the middle rail.  Stitch down at an angle to the bottom rail, then stitch a straight line, ending just below the top “rail”.Anchor.LKennedy.FMQ003Stitch a small circle on top of the vertically stitched line.Anchor.LKennedy.FMQ004 Stitch down a few stitches right on top of the vertical line.  Stitch to the left a few stitches  then back to the vertical line, then stitch to the right a few stitches and back to the vertical line.Anchor.LKennedy.FMQ005 Stitch on top of the previous line of vertical stitching to the bottom rail, then stitch up at angle mirroring the left side of the anchor.  This completes the first anchor.

Anchor.LKennedy.FMQ006Stitch down to the bottom rail to begin the next Anchor in the row.
Anchor.LKennedy.FMQ007Anchors Aweigh!
Anchor Free Motion quitlingBecause this motif is primarily linear, it complements the curvy lines of the other motifs.

Wouldn’t it be make a gorgeous border motif?

Doodle it a few times then set anchor on your next quilt!

Smooth sailing (and smooth, happy stitching!)

Lori

PS….This tutorial was stitched on my BERNINA 770QE -domestic sewing machine- with the fabulous feature that cuts the bobbin and top thread with just a press of a button–amazing!

Thread:  Aurifil 50wt cotton in the bobbin, Sulky 40 wt Rayon on top.

Fabric:  Kona cotton

Batting:  Warm and Natural cotton

    Hiya Lori,
I sat and watched the first three parts of your Divide and Conquer Craftsy class and thoroughly enjoyed it. You even inspired me to doodle last evening while watching TV instead of hand stitching. Congratulations on a job well done. Now I’m hoping you’ll publish a book. x

Great Craftsy class, Lori!! Thanks for all your teaching and sharing 🙂 I am totally self-taught (having only sewed one article of clothing in HS over 40 yrs ago. There are no classes near me, so I rely on the internet for tutorial videos and blogs to learn how to improve my skills in this “new” passion! Every day when I read the Inbox Jaunt, I find myself thinking “I can do that…with practice”. After taking the Craftsy class, I KNOW I can do it!! Thanks for all you do and share… 🙂

Love the anchor, but I don’t like it chained together. I need to work on this – maybe intersperse it with another motif.

    Hi Lori,
I am interested in your tutorial but two questions, can I get it delivered to Australia and is it on a video or DVD?
    Enjoy your info
    Chris

Christine, The class is an online class-no DVD. You shouldn’t have any problem at all getting it delivered to Australia. Once you buy the video, you own it forever and can even bookmark it and take notes. I think you will find it very easy to use and access. Also, Craftsy has an amazing team for Customer Service to guide you if you have any technical difficulties.
