Signs of Spring Inspire Machine Quilting!

Free Motion Quilted Baseballs

Good Morning, Quilters!

My sewing studio overlooks two 150 year old oak trees and as I was stitching away last week, I noticed a flash of red out of my window. The first red, red robin came bob-bob-bobbing along!  That means spring is truly here and warm weather can’t be far behind!

The other harbinger of spring–baseball! While my son no longer plays baseball…oh how I miss those days…I still can cheer for my two favorite teams–the Chicago Cubs and the  Minnesota Twins!

Learn how to machine quilt a baseball with the step-by-step tutorial HERE.

And then make a “Home Run Quilt” for YOUR favorite player or team!?

If YOU are a baseball fan, you might also like to know what Shoeless Joe Jackson and machine quilters have in common!

Joe Jackson was considered one of the early baseball greats but was expelled from baseball in his prime because of involvement in the Chicago Black Sox  gambling scandal. He was later acquitted. Read more at the Society for American Baseball.

I love seasonal quilting designs. They can really add a lot of interest to a quilt.
I also love, love, love baseball. I spent many hours watching my three kids play all the way from T-ball to high school. I even coached some of my daughter’s teams.
These days I get my baseball fix with my beloved St. Louis Cardinals. I love to stitch while I listen to the games.

My favorite teams, too! I grew up 2 blocks from Wrigley Field.

I, too, miss my son’s baseball playing days. His son has no interest in playing, but he likes to watch baseball on TV. We try to get to a Nationals game once a year. It is chilly here in the Richmond, VA, area today, but tomorrow it’s going to be 70. I can’t wait for warm weather! And it’s baseball season!

My grandson is named in honor of Joe Jackson!! Yes his Dad and Grandpa are White Sox fans❤️

Always love your motifs! The birds singing are darling. I am happy you mentioned the Cubs first as favorite baseball teams

This brings back memories of you quilting on camera for the local news station in Houston during the World Series!!! Good times.

Robins are here in eastern North Carolina as well as Jays. The winter for this area has been very prolonged and it is unusual to not having the weather to be very warm. Today it is windy and cold. So I have a day of quilting with hot chocolate.

  • Ooh la la on the baseball. I have worked on quilt tops for the Burn Victim Camp at east Okoboji. This will be perfect for those ! And looks like something even I can handle!

The Robins have been back on Canada’s western ocean coast for a few weeks now, but the Varied Thrushes — possibly third cousins to the Robins — are still bobbing around. They come down from the snow line when there’s not enough food to be found, and they’ll soon disappear back there. The Rufous Hummingbirds have been back now about two weeks, sparring tweetingly with the Anna Hummingbirds, who are year-round visitors to our feeders. The Rufous take all feeders as their own, and although only about 2/3 the size of the Annas, they fight them aggressively. I’ve had as many as 14 Hummers lining up for a drink at the feeders. All’s very happy in the bird world. I’m now looking forward to the return of the Steller’s Jays and the Swallows.

  • Robins have arrived and are very busy in my neck of the woods, (Montana). My oldest daughter and her husband are the baseball fans in our family. They are Oakland A’s fans and recently went to Japan to see them play the Mariners in exhibition games. As to seasonal quilting, as I practice your motifs I can envision doing more of that type of quilting, especially for my grandson. Thanks, Lori, for your wonderful inspiration and instructional talent!

I am a seasonal quilter but I’m doing less and less quilting. You do inspire me to do more though!
I saw my first robin last week.
After our harsh winter he was a sight for very sore eyes.
I love the KC Royals but am a fair weather fan. I live when they’re winning!

  • Just love your books! I’ve got them both and I REALLY can’t draw, so the step by step instructions are fabulous.

As were the little treats with the books! 🙂
