Love to see these beautiful art pieces, Lori. Thanks for the Saturday art show.

  • I especially like the art pieces showing two women sewing in companionship. Thanks, Lori.
I worked on this one as a paper piecing project at WisconsinQuilting. Lots of fun.

  • Just want to thank you for these posts. Love the artwork. Theme is terrific.

Loved the comments from Marta! Wonder how she would get the SAND out of the yarn? I didn’t know that you had to get gussied up to go to the beach “back then!” Betcha that it is a DIFFERENT scene on their beach now!!!!
Thanks Lori, always look forward to what you have to share on Saturday!

This painting/poster made me chuckle ! The style reminds me of the flapper era but the info says it was during the Gay 90’s time frame of the previous century. The lady on the right seems to be hand sewing and is sitting on a sturdier seat than the other canvas one. Her shoe sole is so clean too. The lady on the left is knitting but looking for what? Did a noise get her attention? Is she watching for two young men to join them? She wore her best hat so surely the dandys will show up! The colors and shapes and composition of the painting are so interesting. Ha,.. the yarn is on the sand ! The poster might be to advertise a Rent-A-Tent A Jour- 15 Centimes, au francais. (corrections please?) This poster is so enjoyable, I would love to have it on my sewing room wall !

This puzzled me too so I went back an re-read Guillaume’s biography. The Gay Nineties was an era of leg o’ mutton sleeves, corsets that created tiny waists, and big bustles. I have a photo of my maternal grandmother that was probably taken around the end of that era and she’s cinched into a corset, has puffy sleeves and the Gibson Girl pompadour hairdo. The artist must have painted this beach picture in the 1920’s when the “ideal” female shape de-emphasized the bust and hips, creating a silhouette more like Twiggy of the 1960’s. Since the artist lived until 1942, perhaps this is the case. Regardless, it’s a beautiful poster and I love the movement in it, knitting, stitching, flag and tent flaps in the breeze. Just delightful.

And my grandmother, bye the way, continued to wear a corset well into the 1960’s. She said it was to show off her “glamour” as she called it – her bosom, which was considerable. Mae West had nothing on Susanna Mason Cummings, my Granny!
