Red, White and Blue

May 27, 2016

Machine Quilting, Lori Kennedy

Good Morning, Quilters!

It’s time to shift from the pastels of Spring and into the rich colors of Summer!

Hurray! Hurray!

Hurray for the Red, White and Blue!

Machine Quilting, Lori Kennedy

The Bachelor’s Buttons and Ajuga are blooming in my garden…

And I just finished a little vase quilt using the sample from  The Chain Stitch  Variations Tutorial

I added The Twist and The Easy Greek Key between the rows of Chain Stitches.

(We will be working on Boxed Stars (corners)  next week!)

THREAD MATTERS

For the white Chain Stitch, I used 40 wt Rayon.  The white is a high contrast against the blue, so it shows up very well.

For the red Twist and Greek Key, there is little color contrast between the thread and the fabric, so  I used a heavy weight thread–Sulky’s 30wt cotton–to make it more visible.  Then I used the bright red binding to really help “pop” the red threadwork.

Any finer thread would not show up as well.

I LOVE changing the flowers, vases and quilts in my house…

The change…like contrast in design….makes one “see” better!

And by now, I’m sure you see that this is a “Horizontal Composition”!

For more on different compositional styles, check out my Craftsy video:  Divide and Conquer-Creative Machine Quilting.

What about YOU?

What thread is in YOUR machine right now?

What’s blooming in YOUR garden?

What’s decorating YOUR table?

We’d LOVE to hear!

Happy Summer Days,

Lori

Cute vase mini, like that chain stitch. Right now I have a vintage table cloth with a vintage sewing machine drawer holding different teas, this will remain about another week until we get the fourth’s deco out. I’m trying to get a vintage quilt top done to use as a table topper.
Hmmmm… seem I’m about vintage right now.

After doing the last quilt along, I have so many ideas for horizontal composition small quilts for friends and family members! Where do you buy your Sulky thread??

I’ve got clematis, cat mint, and roses blooming. In my machine is plain, old, boring off-white. Haha!

So very pretty. Thanks for pointing out the importance of thread weight.

Having come fair.y recently, I’m wondering if you use the Bernina stitch regulator.

No. I learned to FMQ before they were available.

Great horizontal quilt and the colors seem to vibrate off the screen!! The thread in my machine is Superior Threads Magnifico in black — lovely sheen. Blooming in our landscape are black-eyed susans, ice plants, Autumn sage, Russian sage and some pretty white, trumpet snapped flowers on the abelia kaleidoscope. Decorating the table is a braided oval table runner with a mason jar filled with little flags!! Just need to add some flowers like you. Thank you for your time and well written posts! Enjoyed looking at your mini quilt. As always you are full of interesting ideas to keep everyone’s minds looking outwards. My iris have started to show as have one of the rhodies (pink) with more each day. Veggies are in and ready to do their thing (grow) and now I look forward to working on quilt projects while sitting outside. Have a good weekend.
