Raw Edge, Free Motion Appliqué Project with OLFA

April 6, 2018

OLFA cutters, Lori Kennedy Quilts

Good Morning, Quilters!

Do YOU need a quick project to brighten up your house?

I have a perfect project for you!  In just a few hours, you can complete this raw-edge, free motion appliqué project that I designed for OLFA.

OLFA cutters, Lori Kennedy Quilts

As the OLFA Designer of the Month, (Read my interview HERE) I received a beautiful collection of their products.  I have been using OLFA rotary cutters, mats and rulers for years, so it was fun to receive some new toys–including the Splash line of colorful cutters with quick change blades.  One of my favorite new toys is the circle cutter (more on that in an upcoming post!).

OLFA, Lori Kennedy Quilts

I think you will love the OLFA project.  (It’s quick and easy –-with step-by-step instructions and photos–and the technique is very versatile.  The project can easily be adapted to any size–or make several to create a triptych!

(NOTE-If you are having trouble with the PDF from OLFA–you can download it HERE as well.  Download it as a PDF before printing to get the correct size.)

Yes! I ordered an LED light strip for my sewing machine harp area and I love it. With older eyes I need as much light as I can get and these LEDs do the trick.
I’ve never tried raw edge appliqués, but these are darling and will add them to the list of “need to finish” projects.

Thank you for sharing your instructions for the cute triptych! I found the instructions but no link to the PDF for the patterns. I am sure I have overlooked the link so would love a hint where to find the link or the patterns, if possible. Thank you for sharing all that you share with us!

These are really cute, great for practicing FMQ, and you have a finished piece to display. I am currently working on a BOM applique project but I don’t do a lot of applique. I only do raw edge applique as I find the other techniques take too long for me. I think I’ll fit this little project in with the BOM applique project. Love the colors.

I love raw-edge free-motion applique! I’ve just finished a few kitchen towels using this technique. It’s snowing again here in Montana so I’m also making bright and flowery things just to keep my sanity!

I also need a new rotary cutter. I’ll be reading your interview with Olfa in-depth. I love their new colors.

Never tried raw-edge applique since I’m uncertain how it will last with repeated washings. I so far have only sewn and quilted items that can handle lots of use by children and messy family members (no wall quilts). Are multiple machine washings a “no no” for raw-edge pieces like this? I assumed they would fray too much for longevity.

Lori, I love the raw edge free motion project! If I use this method for table runners will they be durable enough to withstand the washing machine? I can’t wait to get started. Thank you

I think so- the fusible helps.

Raw-edge applique is my favorite, been doing it for many years. If I’m going to wash, I go around twice, works well.

      Do you wash your pieces?

    2. Linda says:

Thanks for that info. I haven’t tried raw edge applique because I was concerned that it would stand up to washing, especially the frequent washing of baby’s and kid’s quilts.

    Thanks for sharing the pattern.
