Quilt Project Priorities

Quilt Project Priorities with Time Estimates, Lori Kennedy

Today’s Topic: Quilt Project Priorities

Good Morning, Quilters!

Did you know it’s less than 100 days until Christmas and Hanukkah? My goal is to be completely organized this year, and then head into 2024 with a solid quilting plan. For me, that means focusing on the most important projects–and not starting any new projects until I finish several old ones.

Time Management for Quilters

If you are like most quilters, you have more quilts and projects to create than time (and energy) to complete. Some are new, and some may be so old they are growing fungus! Consequently, it’s very important to set quilt project priorities to avoid wasting your limited quilting time. While stitching on small, inconsequential projects gives us a feeling that we are working hard, if the effort doesn’t match our goals, the time is poorly used.

Quilt Project Priorities-Quick Review

By now you should have created a list of all your projects. (See Create a Quilt Project Inventory). The list should include all types of projects, including sewing, knitting, crochet, painting, macrame…(Does anyone do macrame these days?) It’s important to include all projects that compete for your time. Next, sort the projects giving every project an A, B, or C label. Do this step quickly. Your first, quick assessment is probably the most accurate, and the decision is not set in stone, you can re-evaluate later.

Label every project on your list by how important it is for you to complete.

The easiest projects to label are the ones on the extreme edges of the spectrum: the high and low priority quilts-so look at those projects first. If it’s not an A or C quilt, then it rates a B.

My sister uses the question, “How bad would I feel, if I never completed this?” Here are some other ideas about what label each quilt project deserves:

High Priority-Label A

If the quilt in process fits any one or all of the following criteria, consider an A Label.

  • More than 75% complete.
  • You know exactly where it will go when the project is complete.
  • You LOVE the process.
  • You LOVE the final outcome.
  • Everything about the quilt excites your interest.

Low Priority Quilt Projects-Label C

Consider the lowest ranking for quilt that fall into the following categories:

  • Created to practice a technique and you never liked the project.
  • The color or style no longer match your home.
  • Your current skill level far outpaces your technique in the project.
  • The fabric or materials are poor quality.

Medium Priority Quilt Projects-Label B

If you’re not sure where to place a quilt, it probably deserves a middle-of-the-road status.

  • Less than 75% complete.
  • Not sure who you would give it to or where it would live in your house.
  • Good technique, but the project no longer excites you.
  • Quilt projects where you’ve invested a lot of money or time.

Time Required to Finish

When I created my list, I added a guesstimate of how many hours would be required to complete the project. For example, I can guess that my Carolina Lily quilt will take about six hours to create the label, wash the quilt and check for stray threads. On the other hand, I am working on a Baltimore Album quilt and I just added the note, Greater than 100 hours!

What about YOU?

Do YOU plan your quilting time according to goals or priorities?

What criteria do you use to determine the best use of your quilting time?

How many unfinished projects do YOU have?

Now I don’t want to distract from your current projects, but these little mushrooms by Ann Wood are fun to make!

May YOU finish all of YOUR quilts before they grow fungus,
