More Doodling with Scallops and Lines

March 18, 2020
Good Afternoon, Quilters!

Today we will continue to doodle with scallops and lines. Basic shapes can be combined to create a wide range of patterns.

Just keep your pencil moving!

See how many different shapes and patterns you can create with scallops, tapered scallops, circles and lines. (Tutorials and ideas below.)

My Favorites

I filled several pages with  combinations. Here are some of my favorites:

Fish and water?–maybe I will flip the scallops next time so it looks like water!

Simple Leaves on the margin.

If I used a green pen, I’d have stationery!

Shallow scallops create a pretty flower.  Adding spokes really creates interest!

Another variation of the flowers.

Hi Pat you need that slippy thingy so your quilt moves freely. Don’t ask me–I prefer to longarm🙃

Doodling is great, but my real problem is handling the quilt when I try to sew. It seems to catch and drag and I find it hard to complete even small motifs. Any suggestions?

  • Doodling has meditative effects as well and who doesn’t need that in these times! Thank you Lori for giving us so many tools to make our quilting better and our lives more peaceful.

Hi Lori! I have to say that you are so right about doodling… it is definitely needed to begin machine quilting a quilt! Thanks to you I have found that the practice of doodling has been so fun and very rewarding learning your artistic talent. I have never felt like I could draw even a simple flower but with your technique one can actually feel like an artist. The bonus is that putting your technique to work on a quilt works! My friends and sisters are just astonished at my machine quilt work! Thank you!
