Lori Kennedy Quilt WORKING AHEAD

While you are working on Block Three, you might want to start thinking about batting and creating your backing.  I like my wall hangings to be rather flat, so I plan to choose a low loft batting like Warm and Natural Cotton batting or 80/20 Warm which is 80% cotton and 20% polyester.

I usually piece my backing with medium sized scraps.  Because my quilt top is so colorful, I decided to tone it down on the back with a mix of gray fabrics.  I prefer to wash my backing fabrics–I don’t want the back to shrink and cause distortion of my quilt if I choose to wash it later.  Also, consider starching the backing fabric–it will help it slide when it’s time to…my favorite…FREE MOTION QUILT!!!!

    Warm and Natural

  • My go-to battings are either Hobbs Polydown or Hobbs 80-20 cotton-poly, depending on how the quilt will be used and whether hand or free motion quilted.

  • Martha

I use “Warm & Natural” most often (probably because it is a frequent sale-priced item where I shop!)

  • I like Hobbs 80/20 and Quilters Dream wool. But I bought an entire bolt of Soft n Crafty 100% cotton batting from Joanne’s at an incredible price a couple years ago (about $85) and I use that most of the time. It’s low loft, needle punched, scrimmed, and quilts up beautifully. PS I like buttons too. I have my mom’s and mine going back years and years.????

I bought a big bolt of Warm and Natural, and have only really used that, except for the quilt I am doing right now, I am using Army Surplus wool blankets. My brother wanted a heavy quilt like they had in the old days. I had no idea how to accomplish that so wool blankets are my attempt.

I love to make bed quilts and I want them puffy so I like quilters dream puff.

  • Karen

My favorite batting is Quilters Dream Request (very low loft) which drapes nicely. Question, you mentioned that you wash your backing fabric, do you wash the fabric you piece the top with as well? Thanks!
