Lori Kennedy Quilt WORKING AHEAD

While you are working on Block Three, you might want to start thinking about batting and creating your backing.  I like my wall hangings to be rather flat, so I plan to choose a low loft batting like Warm and Natural Cotton batting or 80/20 Warm which is 80% cotton and 20% polyester.

I usually piece my backing with medium sized scraps.  Because my quilt top is so colorful, I decided to tone it down on the back with a mix of gray fabrics.  I prefer to wash my backing fabrics–I don’t want the back to shrink and cause distortion of my quilt if I choose to wash it later.  Also, consider starching the backing fabric–it will help it slide when it’s time to…my favorite…FREE MOTION QUILT!!!!

I usually use an 80/20 blend because it seems like it works most of the time and then I don’t have to think about it.

Warm and Natural is locally available but I’m getting ready to try the Hobbs 80/20. I wonder, if you are allergic to wool, do I dare put it inside a quilt?

  • Mary Grass

I prefer Hobbs 80/20 for a quilt that will be used. For a wall hanging, I prefer a 100% cotton batting.

  • Pat V

I was struggling with batting until I read that you IRON your batting! What a concept. I thought that was a no no. I now use Warm and Natural 100% cotton.

  • Carol in Arkansas

I’m too new to quilting to have a favorite, but I am enjoying doing a bit of free motion quilting. Not good at it yet, but practice, practice. 🙂

  • I started out as a Warm and Natural user, but when I tried wool, what a difference. I use it for the special quilts! I love the loft, drape and the way it quilts up. However, my go to these days, so is that my favorite?, is an 80/20 blend. It seems to have a nicer loft than 100% cotton and isn’t as expensive or hot as wool.

  • Linda C

I use Quilters Dream it feels great to sleep under. I’ll have to check out I love buttons web site. Linda C in Tennessee
