Honeycomb Quilts: Large and Small Scale

December 6, 2018

Honeycomb Quilt Motif, Lori KennedyGood Morning, Quilters!

For the past several weeks, we have been working on The Honeycomb machine quilting motif and several variations.

(Be sure to check out these motifs in my book, More Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3 –and get a little surprise with every book ordered!)

Motifs:

The Honeycomb

Hosta Leaf

Honeycomb Snowflake Ornament

Honeycomb Leaf Doodles

Today, I’d like to share two small projects using the motifs in various sizes and combinations.

A Quilted Table runner with the Honeycomb Motif

I practiced large scale doodling on my design wall (read HERE) and then went straight to stitching!  I was able to quilt this fairly quickly because of the large scale.  I only wish I had added one more row of the Honeycomb pattern.  This looks a little off-balanced to me!

Odd numbers create better design balance–a  good trick to remember!Honeycomb Quilt Motif, Lori Kennedy

Small Scale-Dense Quilting

I played around with a variety of thread weights and colors to create a small “vase quilt”.  Though it is much smaller, the dense quilting took a lot more time–but I loved every minute of it!

This little quilt accomplished several things:

Thread sampler

Motif sampler

Batting sample

Quiet meditation!

What about YOU?

Do YOU create samples?

Do YOU quilt to calm your mind and your body?

Have YOU tried any of the Honeycomb motifs?

We’d LOVE to hear!

Your Calmer Quilter,

Lori

I LOVE the blue honeycomb table runner. Great idea! Our guild makes placemats throughout the year and then in Dec gives them to Meals on Wheels to give one to each recipient of a meal. I think this would work great for placemats, too!

Lori, I love the honeycomb design. I’ve been doodling and practicing on paper. I had spine surgery two weeks ago and am not able to use the machine yet. So can’t wait to try this with all the variations. THANKS!

    • Get well! I hope doodling and reading about quilting is keeping your mind occupied while your body heals! Best wishes on a speedy recovery!

  • Love the use of different colored threads and enjoyed your previous quilt a longs…are you planning any new quilt a longs in the future?

    • Yes! I love doing the quilt-a-longs. They do take extra planning so I wasn’t able to sneak one in 2018! I have several ideas for 2019!!
