Hedgehog Pin Cushion

November 24, 2014

Hedgehog Pin Cushion

A GREAT LITTLE GIFT

I love pincushions and this pin cushion makes me smile every time I use it.

It was a gift from my sister.

It’s nice to have sisters-especially sisters who know how to knit.  (I’ve never indulged.)

She found the pattern on Ravelry.

Hedgehog Pin CushionPerhaps YOU have a sister (or a sewing sister) who needs a little something…

If you don’t knit, you might like this pin cushion tutorial from early days of The Inbox Jaunt.

Colleen, thanks so much for the chicken pin cushion link. The hedgehog is cute but I don’t read blogs to have to BUY something.

Lori, since I love pincushions too, I had to visit your tutorial. In reading your tutorial, I realized that you seemed to do EXACTLY what I wanted to do on an ornament in my mind … and that was to do some “pre-sewing” with just the batting and the top with the batting toward the feed dogs. I have a friend who told me that would NEVER work and the feed dogs would eat up the batting.

I’ve never “trapuntoed”, but it seems to me that if you are going to outline your design, the batting MUST be down for that initial part. I’ve read numerous “tutorials” on line, but NONE of them address that. They just say something like “stitch around your design.” If you can’t put the batting toward the feed dogs, how are you going to do that? And how could you SID accurately as you did on your pincushion? Surely my friend is wrong.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this!

You CAN stitch without a backing fabric. In other words, you can stitch with batting as the bottom layer. I usually use an all-cotton batting, but you could give other batts a try.

I made a whole quilt with the batting as the backing using the quilt-as-you-go technique that I learned from Penny on the blog Sew Take a Hike. The feed dogs did take a bit of batting off, so I had to clean the bobbin area often, but it was so much nicer than having to cover the seams after construction. I want to make one for myself, and I think I will put a very thin cotton on the back to reduce the amount of fuzz. I would still put another backing over the whole quilt when done.

I love the little pink pincushion! Is there instructions for it? I have the pink eyelash yarn to make it with just don’t have the pattern or directions.

i had a scrap piece of eyelash fabric that i used…then i just trimmed the ‘lashes’ from around the face….i used the free pattern i included in the first link….i suppose you could attach some eyelash yarn to another fabric to use for the body….i may try that someday

I’m in the process of making this one, sewing the seams on my sewing machine 🙂 too much hand stitching for me! It’s turning out great! http://mollyandmama.wordpress.com/2014/05/31/make-a-felt-pear-pin-cushion/

I LOVE this little guy and I am thankful for my sisters and my daughters as well. My daughter made me the cutest square tufted pin cushion for my birthday and I love it! I am so going to make this little hedgehog…been hung up on them since little Charlie was born. Lots of hedge hog baby fabric!
I’ve made a few of the chickens Colleen posted…they are cute if you use a pieced block too…good for orphan blocks. I just saw a mouse made from the same pattern on Pinterest, use the flat side for the front, add ears, tail and stitch a little face. Not a creature was stirring…Lol!
Fun!…I love pincushions! Can’t wait to see what others post! Lol!

It cracked me up that you wrote the word “PIN” on your square pincushion Lori. Love the different versions of the little hedgehog and that pear pincushion is beautiful! I’d never seen a knit hedgehog before – now I wish I was a knitter!
This is a tutorial I wrote for a cake pincushion, which a lot of people loved on The Quilting Board, so I updated it and put it on my blog: http://www.buzzinbumble.com/2014/07/a-cake-pincushion-tutorial.html

I, too, love pincushions. I have 2 Pinterest boards with them on it. I’ve made several from the pattern by Mimi Kirschner using teacups and saucers. I do knit, but I don’t know if I want to take the time to make one of these adorable guys. I have a sweater I’ve been working on (or actually not working on) for my daughter for the last 5 or 6 years. I have a hard time finishing things.

While I learned to knit, as a kid, it has been years since I’ve knitted and I never made anything more than a blanket. Unfortunately, my sisters don’t knit (or quilt). I wonder if I can talk a friend that knits into making one for me. So cute. Maybe we need a class to learn to knit a hedgehog pin cushion! I’d sign up.

    Hi,

You just gave my day a different direction 🙂

At the moment I’m working on patchwork/quilting patterns which I want to offer via Craftsy.

I’ve got a cute little hedgehog pincushion, though, which I never turned into a pattern – so I’m going to do that first. As I have only just joined Craftsy, I have no idea how long that will take, but I’ll post it on my blog http://quiltingoneness.wordpress.com as soon as it’s up.

    Thank you for the idea!
