Happy Hours-Creativity and Community

April 3, 2020
Creativity and Community

Good Morning, Quilters and Friends!

Welcome to a new series at LKQ- Happy Hours-Creativity and Community!

Our usual content, quilting, doodling and creativity are great ways to pass many happy hours…

With our new feature, Happy Hours, we would like to add other content as well!

Join us for a joyful break every Friday as we  feature uplifting and useful podcasts, videos and articles.

A Family Affair

My five daughters and I have been collecting and sharing bright notes and hopeful stories to keep us smiling and connected.   #togetheralone.

We would love to share with YOU and hear what made YOU smile this week!

Lori’s Pick: The Science of Well-Being

I recently started Yale University’s FREE class, The Science of Well-Being by Laurie Santos and highly recommend it.

The class is the most popular class in the history of Yale.  More than 600,000 people have signed up for the free class last month!

The online course, features lectures by Santos on things people think will make them happy but don’t — and, more importantly, things that do bring lasting life satisfaction.

Read about the class HERE.

Claire’s Pick:  The USNS Comfort Arrives in NYC March 30

This photo paints a thousand words…

Deirdre’s Pick:  Ina Garten’s Quarantini Recipe

We all loved Ina Garten’s cosmopolitan recipe-called the “Quarantini”.

Just remember–Quarantinis and quilting DON’T MIX–but

Doodling is BETTER!

Faye Connects us with Zoom!

The best thing we did this week was a virtual get together via Zoom.  It was free and easy.

Faye went to the Zoom site to set it up the conference party and sent us an email with a link.

After clicking the link, it was easy to follow the prompts to download Zoom and join the party!

Even if you’re not tech savvy–this is an extremely easy way to get together with your family and friends!

Creativity and Community

Creativity and Community are two great ways to spend Happy Hours!

Please join us and share!

What made YOU smile this week?

How are YOU staying connected with family and friends during quarantine?

What creative projects are YOU working on?

We’d LOVE to hear!

Lori, Nora, Claire, Deirdre, Olivia, Faye (and occasionally, Patrick!)

    Hi Lori
I was thinking of you this morning and how we had talked about a South Texas visit for you. We will make it happen when all this is over. Take care of you and your beautiful family.

Chuckle…. eventually your family will be so large pictures will have to be taken outside ! What a blessing, My mom was one of nine kids. Growing up with my cousins was wonderful and now we connect with each other via electronics. Uh, Lori, were you cold? wearing a jacket? Hey, ask your Spouseman to put another log in fireplace. Today I am sewing cards to go to an assisted living, the residents can’t have family visits right now. I used fabric with hearts on it and wrote a message of cheer in color.,,sort of like raw edge applique. Our son way out West… many miles away from GA …wants us to face time. Gee I’d have to get dressed and do my hair ! We will see.

i belong to a group called Common Thread. About 40-50 women meet weekly to make items that are sold at our annual Hearts & Hands market at our church in Houston, TX. we make between $10,000 and $15,000 a year for various charitable organizations. Right now we’re making (free) masks for individuals and hospitals. Very rewarding!

Granddaughter’s 3rd grade class has had Zoom parties with her classmates. I may have to try it with my quilt bee.
I’ve been sewing face masks, for my dr niece and hubby and myself. He has a health concern so we are really trying hard to keep him well.
Getting lots of jokes thru email these days. Many are LOL worthy.
Stay well and safe. Keep your inspiration coming. Thanks so much, Lori.
    God bless…from a sister quilter from Mpls…Mary

I stay busy making masks for the Retirement Center/Assisted Living/Independent Living. So far have made about 4 doz in Hawaiian material, they love them. The director even sent to CA for more elastic for me as I was down to making ties but that is ok. Fridays we have “Happy Hour” on a rolling cart come by our apts where we have been quarantined going on 3 weeks now. WEW…Thank goodness I am doggy sitting for lady in nursing home, I get to go out in the sun about 4 times a day to get exercise and fresh air. Yeah….I hope there is a light at the end of this black tunnel… Don’t forget to wash your hands everyone…

Wine, beer, hard liquor all provided free each Friday, Sat night beer or wine with your meal. Good thing I am not a drinker. LOL My masks would really be different LOL

My happy hour includes wine, then the doodling really gets creative! Does yours, Lori?

Making Masks for first responders! Using any fabric that might cheer, comfort, console, energize, relieve stress. Minions, seashells, chili peppers. Prayers, of course, go with.
    Prayers for everybody, everywhere.
The zoom photos are fantastic. Now I want to do that too.
    As always, thank you Lori.

Thank you for the recommendation on the Happiness Lab. It looks like a great idea and I signed up for the class as well. It’s good to have positives in these uncertain times and to try to get the most/best out of a bad situation.

Our sip&stitch group has been using zoom to have sip&stitch happy hour the last 2 Fridays 😁🥂. It’s a great way to catch up!

Please everyone, before you use Zoom do your research. There have been many news stories this week about security and privacy issues with Zoom. The FBI is even investigating. There are ways to protect your group, so make sure you check it out first. I’m waiting for some sunshine and warmer temperatures so I can get out in my gardens for fresh air and exercise.
