Good Morning, Quilters!

We are on a blog hop today!  For those of you unfamiliar with the term—a blog hop is like a ten-day progressive party. Every day for ten days, we are invited to stop by a new friend’s house (or blog)  for some refreshments, a little conversation, a few party games and in this case a GIVEAWAY!

Often a blog hop, like a progressive party, is a way to celebrate something.  In this case, we are celebrating  Quilt-Artist-Extraordinaire, Deborah Boschert’s  new book, Art Quilt Collage.

A REFERENCE BOOK OF TECHNIQUES

I am really excited to share this book with you because it contains so many fresh ideas about quilting.  It is a technique book, chock full of inspiration.

Now don’t get excited over the word “Art Quilt”–I know it intimidates many…This book is packed with ideas on how to add interest to any quilt, whether it is a small collage for framing or a king size quilt for your bed.

ART QUILT COLLAGE BOOK CHAT

I had an opportunity to chat with Deborah about her book last week…

After some initial silliness, I threw down a challenge…

Deborah offers a clear path of how to transform an inspiration (like a photo or a word)  into a quilt.  There are machine quilting and hand embroidery tips, design and composition suggestions,(including a design checklist), and a very interesting chapter on personal symbols.

Deborah Boschert, Collage

I was really intrigued by the chapter on Finishing which include several options for edge treatments as well as a variety of ways to mount or hang a quilt.  (I’m thinking some of my “Vase Quilts” might become mounted or framed “Art work”!)

  • This sounds like such a great book! My personal symbol is a dragonfly or a crow. Love both.

  • My symbol would be a tree or an owl since they relate to the definition of my names.

  • English quilter

My personal symbol is a leaf.

  • Susan

My personal symbol would be a kayak. Kayaking on a river or lake is one of my favorite things to do. Watching the blue herons and loons, especially listening to the call of a loon, nothing quite like it.

  • Julia Heck

I think my personal symbol would be something to do with water — waves. Love the fluid motion. I would love to learn how to use different mediums in an art quilt.

  • My personal symbol would be a fleur de lis. Can’t wait to see this book!

  • Pat Meinecke

My personal symbol would definitely be a handbell—a musical instrument which requires several musicians combined to bring forth beautiful music—at the same time developing a strong and important web of friendship and support.

  • Kathy Pitts

Lori, I have enjoyed your comments today, especially the ones getting a dialogue about thread and needles going. I have been following Deborah since her 12×12 days and have enjoyed watching her grow. I would have to say that my symbol is the ginkgo leaf, I use it as often as I can.

  • Sarah Roberts

Thank you, Lori, for your wonderful tutorials.Your fantastic ideas for fmq are fun and encouraging. My personal symbol is probably a blubird..
The collage book looks fantastic and I would love to own a copy.

  • Susan Baker

Hmmm…I’ve never really thought about a personal symbol. Maybe a tree…or a mountain…a flower. I love things related to nature!! And I’d love to win this book!

  • Kathie Banks

My personal symbol shall be a Rose of Sharon. My three bushes bloom all summer long and make me feel surrounded by the love of Jesus who the Bible calls The Rose of Sharon among some 40 other lovely names. Deborah Boschert’s, Art Quilt Collage intrigues me because I’m beginning to see my quilting as an integral part of the artistic expression of my craft. I’m beginning to branch out in my thread play and am devouring every resource I can find on alternative ways to create traditional bed quilts.

  • Helen Boland

I was thinking my personal symbol could be a strawberry. Somehow, I ended up having a collection in my kitchen of all things strawberry! The book sounds so interesting and I would love to try more collage quilts. The little ones are actually easy to finish!

  • Frances

The book looks good. My symbol would be a sago palm.

  • Ruth D Bertaccini

I’ve always loved collage and with fabrics it intrigues me even more! Guess my personal symbol would be a heart as I always draw a heart next to “Mom” when I’m sending snail mail to one of my kids.

  • Mary Huey

I have quilted for many years, mainly traditional. I find myself more and more drawn to art quilts. Debora’s book looks very interesting! My personal symbol would be the heart within a hand-Hands to Work, Hearts to God.

  • Janette Billings

The book sounds amazing. My personal symbol would be a. Horse, wild and free anything possible. Strong and graceful at the same time

  • Marjorie

My symbol would be a pink flowery cup and saucer….I need lots of cups of tea while trying to turn my ideas into real ‘made’ stuff! I sit and look at my stash, and look, and daydream…I need to get round to the ‘doing’!

  • ScrappyCat

I’m not sure what my personal symbol would be – maybe a flower or a cat. I’ll have to give that some thought. This book looks fabulous – thanks for the chance to win it.

  • I love hearing about your challenge to each other. As to the personal symbol, I would pick a seashell. I love collecting them, painting pictures of them and being near the ocean. This book would be a great inspiration to me; hope to win.

  • suzanne guthrie

How inspiring. My symbol would be a leaf….at least for quilting for they are so varied, fun to create, and are alive with promise. Hope to explore the book further.

  • Patricia Foht

Deborah’ book looks very inspiring and I could use some of that right now. I seem to have quilter’s block! My symbol would be trees, all kinds of them.

  • Jo Larson

    Lori,
I found your blog through Pinterest and I’m so happy I did! I loved both of your classes and anxiously await your book!! I have finally conquered FMQ, thanks to your blog. Your work is inspiring.
The challenge sounds like fun, maybe I’ll have to challenge a friend to something similar.
My symbol, that’s challenging, maybe a turquoise vintage camper.

  • Nancy

I think my symbol would be a coffee mug!

  • I am with Kate, never thought about a personal symbol. As this MInnesotan sits on a beach at Pacific City, OR with long time friends, I will ponder who I am. Maybe I will poll my fiends. Maybe a quill pen would work. The book sounds very interesting. I would love to have a copy.

  • Kelly T

I think my symbol would be some swirly flowers. I can’t wait to get this book!

  • Laura M

I’m not much for thinking with respect to personal symbols. But I’d choose something that portrays bravery/risk taking! Now to think about what that might be. Thanks for all these interesting chats and a chance to win.

  • Bettye Nimmer

Can’t wait to view Deborah’s book or for a chance to win a copy of it! I am a bird watcher and cat lover so my personal symbols would be birds/cats.

  • My personal symbol would be a heart. Everything that I craft either through sewing, quilting or decorating all comes from sheer pleasure of sharing to make others happy when using or viewing one of my works.

  • Gypsybaker

What fun…thank you for this blog (a friend just brought it to my attention)..hope I win a copy of what looks to be an amazing book. Personal symbol: a bright candle, a star,
the tree of life…can’t pick just one.

  • Sue` Duisenberg

I have so many memory symbols of family members: dragonfly, owl…but I think for me it is a rose. This book sounds very interesting with lots to learn

  • Rebecca Schmitt

My personal symbol, without a doubt, would be a book!

  • Rowena Gallagher

My personal symbol would be a bowling pin as we tend to spend a lot of time inside bowling alleys al around England. My son is a top junior bowler here and needs transporting around the country and I bowl for Hampshire Senior Ladies. I have to make sure I have some hand sewing with me to while away the time!

  • Rebecca in SoCal

Every stop on this blog hop makes the book sound even better!

My first reaction to “personal symbol” is not a thing, but a shape…circle/sphere. But reading others’ ideas, I also came up with moon, cat, owl (do we see a nocturnal theme here?)

  • Rita Wesney

My symbol would be a beach anywhere. I have always loved the way the waves make a fresh start to everything over and over and over.

  • Christine Deering

What a beautiful book! My personal symbol is probably a cat, curled up and purring.

  • It’s hard to only have one symbol but I think a pretty pair of scissors would be nice..it would be exciting to win a copy of the book also!

  • Kay L Ford-Sollimo

I really had to think about what my personal symbol would be and finally decided that the yen and yang sign would work. We all need to find a balance for everything in our lives. Animal wise how can one choose among butterflies, dragonflies and all of the beautiful birds in God’s creation?

  • jennifer brown

My personal symbol–chickadee, or maybe a Thunderbird to match my car…

  • Diana

My symbol would have to be a cat…because…Worf.

  • Karen Cotter

My personal symbols would be paisley and lowcountry waters (creeks, marsh, plants, birds & sea life). So many ideas were sparked just by seeing your inspirational short video! (Have added your book to my Wish List!)

  • Kathryn

This book looks very interesting and like it would help me stretch a bit more with my quilting. My personal symbol would probably be a little bird or butterfly. I’m a pilot so it would have to be something that flies!

  • Donna Sereda

I would love to own this book! I enjoy making art quilts and one of the reasons is that there is always something new and fun to explore. This book represents hours of playtime between two covers!

  • Jackie Clauson

I love books about art quilts, and this one looks especially interesting. I hadn’t thought of what my personal symbol would be, and it’s taken awhile to come up with something. I guess mine would be a music note since I love music and love to sing.

  • Stacy

My personal symbol would be a tree – it represents nature, beauty, strength, perseverance, etc

  • Not sure what my personal symbol is but I like the idea.. I will have to ponder this!

  • Nancy tanner

Look like a great book. My personal symbol would be a coffee cup

  • Deborah Boschert’s, Art Quilt Collage book sounds right down my alley. I love drawing my own designs and incorporating them on my quilts. Would love to win this beauty.
My Personal Symbol are feathers. Real looking bird feathers and quilted free motion feathers.

  • Anne Godwin

The book looks like a great addition of techniques! Love the combination of machine and hand stitching. Looks like paint has been added too. Hmmmmm Possibilities. Thanks!

  • Carol

It’s time to try something outside my box and art quilts would be fun. My symbol would be a bird.

  • Viki Lee

The post and video are so encouraging for a new quilter like I am, who is attracted to trying an art quilt, and Deborah’s book also feels like beginners would have much to gain from it. As a beginner (have made 2 small quilts) I am enjoying learning all different aspects of the art, and especially like that the book covers many techniques used by FMQ and hand quiltering, plus using many different materials – so much of which I know little about as yet. Today I’d probably pick Sakura (Japanese for cherry blossoms} as my personal symbol because it is a Japanese symbol for new beginnings.
