From Sunflowers to Poinsettias
Good Morning, Quilters!
Hope you all had a very happy Thanksgiving!
And I hope the fridge is stocked with leftovers so you don’t have to cook tonight because I have a great project to kick off Christmas!
With just a little razzle dazzle, The Sunflower Sampler becomes the Poinsettia Sampler!
(For those of you who haven’t been here in awhile, The Sunflower Sampler was our recent quilt-a-long. You can find all the instructions for The Sunflower Sampler HERE.)
Substitute the Poinsettia FMQ tutorial HERE for the Sunflower center.
Choose alternating curvy and linear motifs around the center to fill the background. I used Spirals and The Twist free motion quilting tutorial –and alternated the two motifs in sections around the poinsettia.
By using matching thread, the background recedes and allows the poinsettia to “pop”.
For a simple border, I added wavy lines-one inch apart- and echo stitched each line for more emphasis.
When I finished the border, I realized this would have been the perfect time to have used a Twin Needle–but we’ll save that lesson for another day–coming soon!

Stunning! You’ve done it again! Really? We can use twin needles to FMQ? I can hardly wait for that post.
Wow I was just last night thinking that the sunflower could be a poinsettia! trying to figure it out in my head and here you have done it for us. My sunflower started out great, the my new machine decided it didnt like the piece of iron on batting I had used and I finally put it aside to start a new one with regular batting. Thank you for this.!!

Hmmmmmm……from Autumn to Winter with very slight modifications!!! LUV that!!! I can see this poinsettia motif done on unbleached muslin with gold metallic thread (I luv Superior’s gold varegated metallic, #025……stitches with NO issues!!!!). May have to do something along those lines. Oh Lori………I really didn’t need such glorious inspiration now!!!!! LOL!!!!!

I’m thinking a white material with red stitching for the poinsettia. But I also like the gold thread that treadlemusic suggested above.

How stunning the poinsettia would be — either as a wallhanging/ centerpiece OR at the corners/ along border of a Christmas quilt!! I LOVE redwork, but goldwork would be striking, too! Thanks for keeping the inspiration coming (albeit too late for this year!)!!
