MORE FUN IN THE SUN
It’s Tuesday…time to pull out your Sketch books, Doodle pads, and get to work!
Last Tuesday we worked on The Spirograph Sun Free Motion Quilt Tutorial. Today, we will look at how to vary that motif to create some very interesting effects.
VARIATIONS OF THE SPIROGRAPH SUN
Begin with the basic sun–(draw a 3-1/2inch by 2-1/2 inch rectangle–or ANY size that fits YOUR quilt…)
Stitch the “rainbow” center and add the triangle spikes.
You could just stop here–The basic sun is very simple and lovely…
Or…as you stitch counter-clockwise, add a squiggly triangle…
Now your Spirograph Sun becomes a Squiggly Spirograph Sun--Fabulous!
Or…made both passes squiggly…YOU’ve got to love this!
Let’s go back to the original Spirograph Sun…
Now add a little Upward Curl for the second layer…
Now we have The Upward Curl Spirograph Sun…Fun and Funky!
This time, let’s make two changes: Add a scallop to the “rainbow” center…
Then add a “twisted triangle” for the second layer…
Now you have the Twisted Triangle Spirograph Sun!
Put them ALL together…
Forget it! I can’t even come up with a name for this! What would YOU name this?
I hope this tutorial gives you some new ideas for your next quilt as well as a little insight into how easy it is to modify a quilt motif to suit YOUR quilt!

NOTE-This tutorial was stitched on a Bernina 820 without a stitch regulator using a Schmetz Topstitch 90 Needle using Aurifil 50 wt cotton thread in the bobbin and Sulky Rayon 40 wt on top using Warm and Natural Cotton Batting…

I am going to make a quilt with a great big sun in the center for my G’daughter as she loves when I sing ‘YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE’ before naps. How about that for the name.

I’d call it Rockin’ a Sunbeam! or Spraky! LOL. This is seriously cute…lovin’ it. So this was kind of comical…I’m reading your post’ studying the lovely pics., drinking my coffee like usual and realize I’m humming a funny little tune from way back…think it’s cuz you brought up Spirograph to begin with…and then the words came..a sunbeam, a sunbeam, Jesus wants you for a sunbeam…a song from VBS when I was little. LOL! Anyone else remember that one! I finished the song outloud of course and then laughed at the pic of a fifty something singing at the top of her lungs a kids song and guess what…the notes are still too high…screeching away more like it. LOL! Ok…have a good day. 🙂

So many of my friends have told me how much they love your designs and how easy they are once you show them how to do it. Lori, It is only with the encouragement and ideas from your website that I decided to free motion quilt my grandaughter’s quilt—it has been fun and rewarding. I would not have thought to use the rayon Sulky but I am loving the results. The quilt has stripes in it that act as the “rails” for some of your designs that I am trying. I will try to send you a picture of it when I am done.

When you add in the squiggles, it doesn’t even matter if you can sew a straight line. It looks like you intended it to be that way! I so look forward to Tuesdays so I can see if I can master what you come up with. Free motion has become more fun that piecing.

I have been so saddened by the loss of Robin Williams today that I didn’t think I could find anything to cheer me up .. .not until I came to your site. You have given your designs to us… willingly, heart-fully, with nothing expected except our pleasure. Thank you for your wonderful uplifting blog and your generosity. I love the last picture .. makes me think of those little spiral ferns that come up underneath the trees boughs deep in the woods. Pinning again~
