What a lovely painting to wake up to! Happy July 4th! I read up on the event on wiki–Dec. 25th 1776, prof. boat men to carry the troops which are in the background of the painting, hired ferry to carry horses, wagons, etc.

This is one of my very favorite paintings. We have a framed version of this spectacular scene prominently displayed in our home. God Bless America!!

The original of this painting was destroyed in a bombing in 1942 in Bremen, Germany during WW2. Leutze painted 2 others very similar. 1 is currently displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the other after being displayed at the White House is now displayed at the Minnesota Marine Museum in Winona, Minnesota. This is where I get to go to see it. Each time I see it I notice something new. Love the fact of small midwest town having such wonderful art.
