Easy as Pie-A Free Motion Quilt Tutorial
Good Morning, Quilters, Doodlers, Bakers, and Pie-Eaters!
Welcome to another Tuesday Tutorial for free motion or long arm quilting!
Last week we stitched the Cheery Cherry . This week we’re adding a motif that would look “sweet” paired with the cherries and it’s Easy as Pie!
I have a quilt “baking” in my brain using both these motifs, but it still needs more doodling to come to fruition…
EASY AS PIE-FREE MOTION QUILT TUTORIAL
Begin by drawing a rectangle. For the tutorial below, the rectangle was 5 inches wide and 3-1/2 inches tall.
Begin stitching just above the lower line and approximately 1 inch in from the left side.
Stitch an angled line to create the side of the pie pan. Next stitch 2 and 1/2 shallow scallops. Stop here.From the center, add three loops 0r vent holes for the pie crust.Complete the top of the crust by finishing the other half of the middle scallop and adding two more.Next, working from right to left, add a few more shallow scallops to create the bottom of the pie crust.Echo stitch the left side of the pie tin then stitch along the bottom line. Add the right side of the pie tin by stitching up and at an angle and echo stitching to the bottom line. Stitch over several stitches to create the next pie if you are baking a row of pies.Another option is to add echo stitching around the top of the pie and adding a few loop embellishments. Julia Child would be so proud!
My family LOVEs pie and I love making pies…(The only pie I really like to eat is apple pie with lots of ice cream…so really what I like is ice cream and not pie.)

PS…This tutorial was stitched on my lovely BERNINA 770QE with its gorgeous looking stitch and huge bobbin for extra long sewing…using Aurifil 50 wt cotton in the bobbin and Superior’s Magnifico trilobal polyester on top using a size 80 Topstitch needle.

Oooooh–tough choice—eating pie or quilting???? This is another of your “too-cute” designs. I can hardly wait to try it. I’m working on a little kitchen quilt in vintage 1950’s colors…red, yellow and turquoise…these cherries and the pie are just the perfect quilting design for it. Thank you so much, Lori.

I made a quilt not long ago from cherry fabric now I have a design to try on it! Thanks!! As far as pie I like pumpkin, blueberry, cherry, and of course All American Aplle!!! My Mother in law is a master pie bake and she has tried to show me but didn’t work out so good but she a passed the art on to both of my girls. I quilt they make pies!!

Love apple and peach pie but they don’t seem the same as when Mother baked them. Guess it was all that love that she added. Love this design and will practice this one today.
You aren’t that fond of pie but you make lots of pies. WOW I love pie – favorite is coconut cream – but I don’t like to make them – so much work, If I were to quilt pies – I would have to make pies – the mere thought of them would make me want to eat them!!!

Love your cherries and pie tutorial. As far as pie, I like most of them except mince pie, pecan pie and cherry pie. Don’t know why but those just don’t cut it for me. Would love a piece of homemade Pumpkin Pie right now! 🙂

I just found you a few weeks ago. I have spent hours cruising and more hours playing and doodling. Is there any way to start at the beginning. I can’t figure out how to tell which tutorial is first. They are all wonderful and your method of stitching is so easy to follow I want to start at the beginning to increase my skills in an orderly way.

I love baking pies! The most frequent are apple. I also make savory chicken pies the day after roasted chicken dinners. You sure don’t feel like your eating left overs! I make 6 pie crusts at a time and freeze 4. That way it’s easy to have a pie now and again.
