Doodle to Quilt Challenge

July 16, 2015

House DoodlesGood Morning, Quilt-Doodlers!

We have now been doodling for more than 12 weeks and have had 11 “formal” doodle lessons.  All of the lessons can be found Doodle Tutorials-The Inbox Jaunt or on the Header above.

House DoodlesThis week, I would like to challenge you to take a few minutes to stitch one of your doodles.

House DoodlesI found this in one of my old sketchbooks and free motion quilted it onto a scrap of fabric...

Don’t make the same mistake–I really like this and now it’s unusable because it’s on such a small piece of fabric.

Always assume your work will be great–not just practice– and stitch it onto a well-ironed piece of fabric that you can use!

YOU CAN DO THIS!

Post your photos to FLICKR here.  There’s lots of inspiration to be found there!

We can’t wait to see!

Lori

Alas, due to family circumstances I am way behind but plug away at it when I can. I’ve had to put my machine away for just a bit but it’ll be coming out in a few weeks again, I hope! In the meantime I can doodle wherever I go and that is nice. I still have a long way to go but I am gaining confidence, thanks to you!

Oh, I should add, I love that you have made it so easy for us to find your tutorials. What a blessing that has been!

I would cut out this work with some extra seam allowance. Then add it as a section to another quilt.

I’ve had that happen as I grab a small scrap and make a fast sandwich and do a little warm up before I get to stitching on my project and then I have this silly scrap with something cute on it and don’t want to throw it out…um…how many mug rugs can a girl have…lol. (that I don’t really use cuz I don’t want to get a coffee stain on it!) Lame! LOL!

History has lead me to the same conclusion, the first practice one is usually the best. It is called beginner’s luck. lol

A well placed admonishment!!!! As indicated in the above comments, we have all made the error of doing “just”(I hate, yes hate!, that word) a test piece to have it turn out totally fab in its own right!!!!!!

Nice! Do you do any marking at all for this type of “doodle?” I think some of us are better doodlers than others. . .

Just a few straight lines to keep things straight.

Oh my, a sweet friend told me about your blog and tutorials, and I must say, I’m SO EXCITED I can hardly stand it. I’ve always loved to piece, but when it came time to do the quilting, I was always intimidated. I still am, but since finding your tutorials, I’m hoping that will change. I spent hours on your blog yesterday, but I’m not sure if there is a place that I should start. Are the tutorials in the order of difficulty or do I just dive in? Thank you, thank you for sharing with us!!!

Carolyn so glad you found us! There’s a post titled 7 steps to FMQ in the sidebar but as far as motifs-just dive in!

Those houses of yours, Lori, are precious..! Our guild has a casual motto..” Done is better than perfect ! “…I would like to say, I “rescued” a small quilt by turning back the top layer edge, zigzagging a strip of batting to other batting, and adding a wide border. My friends couldn’t tell the difference..and my don’t- give- up- on- it heart won.
