Doodle and Quilt The Square Flower Motif

August 6, 2020

Today’s Topic:  Doodle and Quilt The Square Flower Motif and Variations

Good Morning, Quilters!

Welcome to Week 8 of our 25 week quilt-a-long based on my new book 25 Days to Better Machine Quilting!

(Find the updated Machine Quilting Lessons HERE and Sign up for Email Lessons HERE)

Today’s lesson is all about one of my favorite motifs, the versatile Square Flower. It is also a fan favorite.  I designed this motif more than six years ago, and of all my original motifs, I have seen The Square Flower on more quilts than any other.  Why?  Because it is pretty and if fills a square block evenly.  The symmetry is very pleasing.

The Square Flower on YouTube

I spent most of the morning creating a video for you (in other words–please watch, LOL!) Just like in the video, I recommend you doodle the motif first, then begin quilting.

YouTube Channel, Quilt with Lori How to Doodle and Quilt The Square Flower

The Square Flower Variations

While the symmetry is pleasing, The Square Flower remains pleasing even when the central spiral is offset.

Try doodling the Square Flower with the center spiral offset and the spiral in different sizes.

The Square Flower Doesn’t Have to Be Square

The Square Flower can easily be modified to fill a variety of shapes.  It fills half square triangles and quarter square triangles very well! (I bet you have a few triangles in your quilts!?)

And even if you are filling a square, you can always turn it into two triangles!

Check out The Flower Variations Tutorial for more ideas and photos!

Stitch the Table Runner

Doodle and practice quilting the Square Flower motif then,  fill in the square blocks on your table runner.

Either fill all the squares with The Square Flower and variations, or alternate The Square Flower with Flower Power.

Use a contrasting color thread so we can really enjoy your handiwork!

Fe sure to share your photos in the private Facebook group, Quilting with LKQ.

And I’d LOVE it if you would share on Pinterest and your Facebook feed and Instagram-and tell them where to find LKQ! (Shameless internet begging)

What About YOU?

Have YOU set up your table runner for this week’s lesson?

Do YOU love quilted flowers?

When is the last time you cleaned your sewing machine? (Shameless internet nagging)

We’d LOVE to hear!

Wow, Lori, I just love the options you have provided! I clearly need to think outside the square flower!

These are wonderful! I am also waiting- looking for something that can be used on small quilts for boys…in the same way the square flowers are used,,,borders, etc. Boys I know don’t want flowers. I assume we will get to a motif that is appropriate for such a use. Just can’t see a square bicycle wheel !! LOL Thank you!

Put a square centre, sharpen the triangles and quadrilaterals that were petals and you have geometric shapes or windmills.

Great video. I loved how you drew out/doodled the motif first before switching over to stitching it. Really helped me cement the layout and pathway in my brain.
