I’m back in my sewing studio and excited to be blogging again!
Thank you to all of you–for your patience and kind words of support and condolence. My Mom, Dorothy Crawley passed away last month surrounded by her family. While her memory failed her, her sense of humor, kind nature and love of family never did! I will always be grateful for the time we spent together and I take solace in knowing she lives on in her 7 children, 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren!
My Mom always put faith and family first. She loved to cook, (I’m pretty sure she liked to clean!?), sew, read, play cards, bowl and go for long car rides. She was known for her lasagna, kolachky, hand-written letters and Christmas cards and for her quilts. One of the most remarkable things about her was that she never said an unkind word about anyone–ever!
We are planning to make a group quilt using the Rose and Dot block to donate to the Alzheimer’s Association. I hope YOU will make a block in her honor or for one of YOUR friends or family. Details to follow…
I think my sister summed it up best, quoting Mother Teresa…
Dorothy did small things with great LOVE.
May YOU always find JOY in the small things!

Lori, my deepest sympathy. My thoughts are with you, I too lost my Mom a few years ago and now it is easier to understand that she is at peace. I hope you are able to have a cup of tea and reflect on all your great memories.

So sorry for your loss Lori. What a blessing a Godly Mom is.

Amen and amen,,,, I had one of those and miss her more all the time. She “graduated” to Heaven in Dec 1999 but seems like yesterday. She taught me to sew at age 10 or so and although she could and did sew anything, she didn’t do quilts. I wish she was here to play with me ! I used to take swatches of various fabrics to her nursing home and she loved them. She would stroke and fold and refold. What a robber dementia is!
This lady used to make ballgowns, majorette outfits, ballet recital dresses, winter coats for children, and casual men’s jackets for some examples. To see you lose your mom, Lori, has reminded us of our own moms and how long and short life can be. Because we love you, we could love Dorothy, too. You are who you are due to the influences she bestowed on you. Thank you for sharing her with us.

I lost my Mom to Alzheimer’s Disease two weeks ago. I think it is one of the most awful diseases because it takes so much from our loved ones. During her progression, my Mom consistently wanted her own mom and wanted to “go home.” I’m comforted knowing that she is with her mom now and at home. Love and prayers to you!

Seeing that your mother had a wonderful life and large family is a comfort and blessing for all of you. Lost my mother in 81 but she also gave me the love of sewing and creating that is a treasure to me. My father 8 years later with Alzheimer’s but wonderful memories of both. Prayers to your family at this time.

Oh Dorothy … I’m so sorry to hear of her passing, Lori. Your pictures of her show a caring, loving, creative woman who likely possessed a humorous streak. You were very lucky to have her with you so long … my Mum didn’t make it to my 24th birthday. Sending kind thoughts and hugs your way.

It is painful. Probably one of the very most painful parts of life.
My mom went to Heaven two years ago. I still miss her every day.

Well done Lori, to have taken that time to be with your Mom. No easy way but to walk through and try to be present. We’ve all missed you and thought of you and your family often. Very glad you’re back. Love your tea cup and small things design. So perfect! Thanks, Linda B

We have all missed you! I am so pleased you were able to take time for the really important part of life. While I missed the daily blog, you did the right thing.
Caring, and being “present” is the best gift you could give yourself.

Lori, It’s clear your mother was surrounded by her loving family who supported her through her Alzheimer’s journey. It’s a most difficult thing to meet her where she was in her memory and have that be “enough”.
As you all grieve and deeply feel the presence of her absence, take heart knowing that slowly, over time, your fond loving memories will help fill in some of the holes carved by grief. Her spirit lives on in all of you.

Sorry to hear about your mom, Lori. She sounds like the kind of person we could use more of in this world, and I know you have your memories to cherish.
Also, she’d have gotten along famously with my lovely mother-in-law, who enjoyed many of the same things. 🙂
Welcome back, and I look forward to participating in the Alzheimer’s quilt!
Laura
My beautiful mother-in-law, Betty Ford Barnes, passed this past Jan. 26, 2018 in much the same way as your mom. They shared so many parallels of faith, family and an abiding kindness to others. Quilting and gardening/preserving her bounty were two of her very favorite things. It was her love of quilting that inspired my own. May your mom forever rest in the loving arms of our Lord in heaven.

So sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. Great memories help but the loss can be overwhelming at times. It has been almost 4 years since my mom died. The first was the hardest but it took 2 years for me to feel a true acceptance. I miss her so much but I remember with joy the years of adulthood we had together. She was a dear friend to so many. Your mom and mine had many of the same priorities. My heart goes out to you as you go through this process. Sending encouragement and love.

Lori, my sincerest condolences. May the memories bring you peace, laughter and love.

My heart is heavy for your loss. My grandmother took the role as my mother so I lost her rather young in life and have missed her every day that goes by. She had tons of “granny-isms” to teach us through life, I should have written then all down!
Glad to have you back in the studio ❤️

So sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. We have a lot in common. My mother passed away last month also. And she had a lot in common with your mother, including the Kolachy and Alzheimers. They will both be missed, and maybe they will meet in heaven.

A few years back, I cared for my mom who had Alzheimer’s. During that time I started to learn to machine quilt to help me deal with the stress. My mom taught me to sew when I was a little girl, but you and a couple of others were my main FMQ teachers. I will be forever grateful for what I learned from you at a time when I really needed a creative outlet. Today, I machine quilt professionally and I still learn new tips and tricks along the way. My condolences to you and your family. Be blessed by the many happy memories you have of your mom.
