Back in the Studio!

Mother's Day

Mother's DayGood Morning, Quilters!

I’m back in my sewing studio and excited to be blogging again!

Thank you to all of you–for your patience and kind words of support and condolence.  My Mom, Dorothy Crawley passed away last month surrounded by her family.  While her memory failed her, her sense of humor, kind nature and love of family never did!  I will always be grateful for the time we spent together and I take solace in knowing she lives on in her 7 children, 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren!

Dorothy

My Mom always put faith and family first.  She loved to cook, (I’m pretty sure she liked to clean!?), sew, read, play cards, bowl and go for long car rides.  She was known for her lasagna, kolachky, hand-written letters and Christmas cards and for her quilts.   One of the most remarkable things about her was that she never said an unkind word about anyone–ever!

We are planning to make a group quilt using the Rose and Dot block to donate to the Alzheimer’s Association. I hope YOU will make a block in her honor or for one of YOUR friends or family.  Details to follow…

I think my sister summed it up best, quoting Mother Teresa…

Dorothy did small things with great LOVE.

Teacups and Love

May YOU always find JOY in the small things!

Our family just completed our 8th annual Alzheimer’s Walk yesterday in memory of my dad. I sewed mittens from old wool sweaters and raised $1,230 for the cause. The memories live on!

With every sun rise, your mother will be smiling upon you. Talk to her and ask her questions, because she is a part of you and gave you all her love and knowledge just waiting to be discovered

This comes from a follower in Liverpool UK.
Sincere condolence on losing you lovely mum. I will remember you and your family and of course your mum in my prayers.

Having gone through this, I just want to say what you are feeling will get better as time passes. She will leave a big hole in your lives but will always be with you.
The many happy memories and love you shared will help you through this difficult time and you will slowly learn to live without he physical presence.
She will however, find a way of letting you know every now and again that she is with God and still looking out for you.
    With love,
    Chrisitne Doherty

A beautiful life that lives on in you and all you do. I have tears rolling down my face missing my mother…. Your blog has been a light for me with the changing circumstances in my life. Doing small things with great love is what I’m able to do right now; it helps to hear that small things can leave a lasting impact. Thank you

What an active and fulfilled life your mom had with her activities and family. We can all learn from her example how to be a kind person by not speaking unkind words.
Thank you for sharing your circle of life with your readers. We will always be here to share and listen as you continue to honor your legacy. Blessings to all of your family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for including that she was a woman of faith. Our family is too, and although the grief is real, it helps to know the hope and promise that we will see them again.

You thought of her with love today
    But that is nothing new.
    You thought about her yesterday
And the day before that too.
You think of her in silence
    You often speak her name.
Now all you have are memories
And her picture in a frame.
    Her memory is your keepsake
    With which you’ll never part.
God has her in His keeping
You have her in your heart.

May God bless you with his endless compassion and comfort.

A few years back, I cared for my mom who had Alzheimer’s. During that time I started to learn to machine quilt to help me deal with the stress. My mom taught me to sew when I was a little girl, but you and a couple of others were my main FMQ teachers. I will be forever grateful for what I learned from you at a time when I really needed a creative outlet. Today, I machine quilt professionally and I still learn new tips and tricks along the way. My condolences to you and your family. Be blessed by the many happy memories you have of your mom.

  • Rhonda

Dorothy was a very special lady! I have some very good memories that I cherish. Thank you for sharing her with so many of us.

  • Karen

So sorry for your loss and a beautiful tribute to your Mom.

  • What a lovely tribute to your Mom. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Good to see you back here too.

  • Donna Nelson

So sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. We have a lot in common. My mother passed away last month also. And she had a lot in common with your mother, including the Kolachy and Alzheimers. They will both be missed, and maybe they will meet in heaven.

  • My heart is heavy for your loss. My grandmother took the role as my mother so I lost her rather young in life and have missed her every day that goes by. She had tons of “granny-isms” to teach us through life, I should have written then all down!

Glad to have you back in the studio ❤️

  • Lori, my sincerest condolences. May the memories bring you peace, laughter and love.

  • So sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. Great memories help but the loss can be overwhelming at times. It has been almost 4 years since my mom died. The first was the hardest but it took 2 years for me to feel a true acceptance. I miss her so much but I remember with joy the years of adulthood we had together. She was a dear friend to so many. Your mom and mine had many of the same priorities. My heart goes out to you as you go through this process. Sending encouragement and love.

  • so sorry about your mother and good to have you back in the saddle, God bless you

  • Linda Kennedy

Lori, I am so sorry for your loss. She raised a close and loving family and you are carrying on her priorities and passions. I have missed you and am glad to have you back.

  • Laura

My beautiful mother-in-law, Betty Ford Barnes, passed this past Jan. 26, 2018 in much the same way as your mom. They shared so many parallels of faith, family and an abiding kindness to others. Quilting and gardening/preserving her bounty were two of her very favorite things. It was her love of quilting that inspired my own. May your mom forever rest in the loving arms of our Lord in heaven.

  • Lori Hope

Sorry to hear about your mom, Lori. She sounds like the kind of person we could use more of in this world, and I know you have your memories to cherish.

Also, she’d have gotten along famously with my lovely mother-in-law, who enjoyed many of the same things. 🙂

Welcome back, and I look forward to participating in the Alzheimer’s quilt!

  • Kathy Nyquist

Lori, It’s clear your mother was surrounded by her loving family who supported her through her Alzheimer’s journey. It’s a most difficult thing to meet her where she was in her memory and have that be “enough”.
As you all grieve and deeply feel the presence of her absence, take heart knowing that slowly, over time, your fond loving memories will help fill in some of the holes carved by grief. Her spirit lives on in all of you.

  • Amy N.

You wrote a beautiful tribute to a lovely lady. I hope your faith will help ease the pain of loss that you feel. I look forward to getting the directions to make a block in her name.

  • ConnieB of AZ

We have all missed you! I am so pleased you were able to take time for the really important part of life. While I missed the daily blog, you did the right thing.

Caring, and being “present” is the best gift you could give yourself.

  • Linda B

Well done Lori, to have taken that time to be with your Mom. No easy way but to walk through and try to be present. We’ve all missed you and thought of you and your family often. Very glad you’re back. Love your tea cup and small things design. So perfect! Thanks, Linda B

  • Mary VanDoodewaard

  • Helen

God be with you and your family. Sending you all thoughts and prayers.

It is painful. Probably one of the very most painful parts of life.
My mom went to Heaven two years ago. I still miss her every day.
Take good care of your heart, Lori. Prayers for all of you from me
