Good Morning, Quilters!
While working on my pile of unfinished quilts, I came upon the Eagle above. I used it as a practice piece to test drive motifs for the Traditional Eagle Quilt below.
It didn’t have much quilting on it…
So I filled in the spaces with a wide variety of quilting including a little lettering.
In the end, I’m not sure which quilt I like better–Two very different styles, but the Graffiti Eagle keeps one looking longer!
Ruby sure likes it!
By the way, what’s with dogs, cats and quilts?!
So which quilt do YOU prefer? Graffiti Eagle or Traditional Eagle?
We’d LOVE to hear!
Mixing it up in Minnesota,
Lori
PS…Both of these quilts were stitched with Aurifil thread in the bobbin (great for lock stitching with slippery threads on top) and Sulky Rayon 40 wt on top–on my BERNINA 770QE (dream machine!).

The traditional Eagle would be my choice. Graffiti is too busy for me. But, you sure do have a talent for quilting. I can only wish to become half as good as you.

i like the traditional, just because i like the clean lines of it. not to say i don’t like busy, just not for this particular motif. love all your ideas and look forward to reading your blog every day! thanks for the inspiration.

For this motif I like the eagle alone, but I like Ruby best of all! We were going to name our newest puppy Ruby when my daughter said, “No! I’m saving that for my first born daughter!” So we backed off. Your lady is beautiful and deserves a lovely name like Ruby.

I love the traditional, but I would like to see it with the writing on it too.

The traditional Eagle is more striking (for me) because it grabbed my attention immediately. Perhaps because my son has completed an Eagle head for a cane to give to a disabled veteran. It was his first “free carving” from a block of wood & he did a marvelous job even to burning in the feathers–the cane will be presented in March to the veteran. I suggested that my son keep it as it is the first he’s ever done but “some poor veteran needs it more” was the response. (He is a disabled veteran himself.)
Sorry Lori, I do love the proud Eagle in his glory & adore yours as always. I wonder, does your brain direct your immense talent or does your immense talent direct your brain? I often ponder these questions. Thank you ever so much for sharing your talent with the world!

That is an interesting question about the creative process!

The graffiti quilt, with an eye added. I think that would help to draw focus on the eagle shape among the other designs.

My sister said that too!

Love both but, the original would be easier for me to do.
You’re wonderful to share your talent and experience with all of us, thank you.

I’d definitely put the original up on any of my walls…think there is too much going on in the other one but it’s a great sampler of things to try:)

I have to agree with Amy…love them both, would like more contrast in the graffiti eagle! They are for completely different quilts and I can’t wait to use them both!!

I like the traditional –

Love your eagles–am working on one in rug hook

I like the traditional. It is easier to see and still majestic. Coming from a Canuck it looks more like the native are here.

I like them both, but the traditional stands out more. They are both beautiful.

I too like the traditional eagle. Both are beautiful, however. I agree with other comments that the graffiti eagle would stand out in a different color thread. Thanks for sharing.

So if you use the Aurifil in the bobbin does that help to lock in the stitches? I have had trouble with slippery threads not wanting to stay in place. I like the traditional eagle.

Yes. Try Aurifil in the bobbin for better tension and better stitch formation.

I’m with Amy in that the eagle in the graffiti eagle quilt would be better in a different color thread. Love the uncluttered look of the traditional eagle but the head looks more like a dove’s head to me. Maybe it’s the beak? I’m sure it’s just me. Great work on both though. It’s good to have you back 🙂
Lorna
In this case I like the traditional. I think the eagles gets lost in the graffiti.

I like the traditional but I like anything that you do.

I like the traditional eagle quilting…not so busy as the graffiti one. Seems like the eagle gets lost with the graffiti around it. I could see the graffiti without the eagle however on a flag motif quilt. Nice job on both!
Amanda Pitman
I think I prefer to look at the traditional eagle. My brain is so cluttered, it’s nice to have places for it to rest. But that’s today. Tomorrow, I’ll probably like all the neat doodles to discover in the graffiti quilt!
Amy Roth
That said, I am always amazed at your creativity! Your designs are so inspiring! I loved yesterday’s little fishies!! 🙂
Amy Roth
I like both. But I’m one for quilt it as much as you can! Though I’d like to see the eagle in the graffiti eagle quilt stitched in a different color to help it stand out more.

I agree! I think that was one of the reasons I abandoned it in the first place. Contrast is really important!
