Quilting and Tradition
For all the weddings in our family, my Mother, two sisters–Patricia and Teri, and I have made a quilt for the new couple. We have stitched nine wedding quilts so far and have one more in progress (for my daughter, Claire who is getting married in May). We made this quilt in 2012 for my daughter, Nora and her husband, Travis.
Nora chose this traditional color scheme after seeing the photos of the Red and White Quilt Show hosted by The American Folk Art Museum. Read more about the owner of the 651 quilts that were displayed HERE. Unfortunately, I was unaware of this spectacular quilt show until after it was over…but there’s good news for all of us…
SewCalGal is hosting a Virtual Red and White Quilt Show this week HERE--with more Red and White events all year– no tickets required! Just pop on over–and add your red and white quilt, too!
Nora and Travis’s Wedding Quilt
This king sized quilt was hand appliquéd using Kona cotton fabric and Aurifil 50 wt cotton thread. I machined quilted it in on my Bernina 820 –a domestic sewing machine –(yes, it can be done!) with Aurifil 28 wt cotton thread.
(Make sure you try one of our many free–free motion quilt pattern tutorials HERE)
Most of the block patterns were downloaded directly from the Poakalani & Co. website HERE. The heart and house pattern was designed by Elly Sienkiewicz.
This quilt was a joy to make–Sewing with my Mom and Sisters is… well…always a stitch!
May the tradition continue,
Lori

Lori……..I am always thrilled when such gorgeous finishes are shared and were stitched on a DSM!!!! I’m constantly trying to overcome the idea that machine quilting a larger quilt must be left to a long armer!!!! Awesome post!!! And a glorious quilt!!! Hugs……….

I love love LOVE that you made this with your mother and sisters! Such a treasure and will definitely be an heirloom! Fabulous quilt, and I am in awe that it was quilted on a sewing machine – biggest I’ve tried on my sewing machine was 90×90 – you have inspired me though! I have one that is 100×100 waiting to be quilted (a postage stamp) – that if I can find a place to baste this big of a quilt, I’ll try quilting it myself!

This is stunning and to be able to make it with family … even better. My mother is not a quilter but I have started to teach my own daughters with the hope that one day we will be able to have family quilts to cherish.

Was this needle turn applique?? The quilt is magnificent.
I’m not sure how you are able to do everything. If you have a secret, please share that, too! I’m ready to share some of my quilting for your tutorials. That will come soon. Thank again for your encouragement and inspiration.

Lori,
Thank you for all the credit that you gave to us (mom and sisters) but everyone needs to know you did the lion’s share of the work—appliquing all of the borders and some of the blocks and the quilting – so, truly a labor of love. How appropriate for February.
Hugs and kisses,
Pat (sister).

How lucky you are to have a quilty family. I’ve had to “make” one from members of my guild – but it works. Your family are lucky too to be recipients of such fantastic quilts!!

Did you wash the red fabric before using it? I want to make a red and white quilt and I don’t usually wash my fabric.
