I hope you had fun with yesterday’s tutorial Swirls and Twirls!  (see the tutorial HERE).  I received a few questions about the tutorial yesterday.

One reader asked about the spacing:  The space between the two rows was one inch.  That is the distance between the top of one row and the bottom of the other.  I staggered the spirals in order that the loops would not touch, but would fill the space between the rows.

Another reader asked how to turn a corner… Space the spirals so that one spiral fills in the corner…  Then use the tail of the spiral to move in the perpendicular direction.

Free Motion Quilting, Spirals, Swirls and Twirls Mini QuiltI couldn’t stop swirling yesterday so I made a little quilt-for my teacup or for a vase.

If this cold keeps up…I may go through a lot of tea!

Hot or cold…hope you have time to stitch a Swirl or two!

    Hi Lori,

I have 5 quilts in line to finish. One I put away for a while, one baby quilt needing quilted and binding, and 3 tops finished but not sandwiched yet! I have set them all aside to get holiday things completed but now… I really must get to these! Quilting is where I get stuck. I hang onto the tops and worry that I will mess up the whole quilt if I try to quilt it myself. This is why I have so many tops. I really love your tutorials and they are giving me good pointers, now I just have to get over my fear and try them.

    Thanks, Jeanette in Columbus, Ohio

  • Hi Lori
Actually it is not that hot in New Zealand at the moment.just a comfortable 20 to 24 degrees Celsius. Not like in Aussie across the big ditch where temperatures of 47 C have been recorded. We seem to be having a cooler summer this year.

Thanks for all your tutorials. I love this one with the echo type embellishing of the swirls.

    Cheers

Thank you for showing me how you went around the corner! I always have to go around corners and sometimes my brain figures it out and other times…pffft! I love adding new patterns to my repertoire of quilting patterns!

  • Oh this is beautiful! I can’t wait to try it out. Thanks so much for the tutorial.

  • I love these…very cute. I forget about just making something little and sweet. It’s been a long time since I made something I can start and finish in a day. !! I’m hooked on the swirls, love them and can’t believe how just a couple whoop-to-do’s added to them did so much to the design! Going to try it 🙂 Thanks for taking the time to show a corner too :)!

PS Thank you too for the instruction on turning a corner and how to make it work with the row it is part of. Your explanation and photos are just perfect.

This is a beautiful tea cup mat or vase mat! Thank you so very much. This is a favorite with me! I have a goal to be able to do this, which will offer incentive for practice. How is your “stitched” finger doing?

Hi! Thanks for answering my spacing question! :). Your precision with such small spacing and small motifs amazes me. I have been working on my first real quilt to be FMQ’d by me, and am attempting your picket fence design. I’ve got my fence built, and am about to work on the flowers. I look at yours, and my attempts aren’t even a reasonable facsimile. I know, being a relative beginner, I need more practice, but I was wondering if you have any tips to help with controlling the stitching in such small motifs? Thanks!
