Good Morning, Quilters and Quilt-Lovers,
Today I offer a sneak-peek of a Christmas present I am making for my niece and her husband.
I was inspired by the Woodgrain motif in Molly Hanson’s new book:
Free Motion Quilting for Beginners and those who think they can’t (There’s still time to enter yesterday’s Giveaway!)
Tuesday’s Tutorial was Woodgrain.
Woodgrain can be used to add texture to any quilt and is very “au courant”.
With Winter upon us, I was inspired by the leaf-less trees in our yard.
Today’s small quilt includes my niece and husband’s wedding date along with the birthdates of their boys.
(As you can imagine-it’s a very busy house!)
I think I will frame this quilt…
Or maybe a simple binding and give her a wooden bowl for apples on her table…

NOTE-This quilt was stitched on Robert Kaufman Kona cotton with Sulky 40 wt Rayon on top and 50wt Aurifil in the bobbin. 50 wt Aurifil was also used on top to stitch the background leaves, etc. This was stitched on a domestic sewing machine, a Bernina 150 without a stitch regulator.

I think that is absolutely lovely Lori. I am so tempted to try for both my daughters and their families but it is ‘too aspire to’ for next Christmas maybe! I really must do more practice. If I did manage the ‘tree’ my FMQ writing is abysmal and would spoil the whole effect! Mmm – maybe a mix of FMQ and embroidery machine writing…. Off to plan 🙂 – thanks Lori for even more inspiration

Framing it will enable it to be enjoyed by so many! And as the family grows up, you could add extra appliqué apples for names/ grandchildren …lol

Very nice and so cute. I would hang it with a sleeve from a cute little wood apple quilt hanger. Although since I made Mom’s little table quilt for her birthday just a couple days ago I am in love with those little quilts on the table. 🙂 Now you got my head thinking up quilt hangers. LOL!

I love arrangements where the quilt is hung over a table and the items on the table coordinate with the quilt–so I”d go with the wooden bowl and apples approach.

Just beautiful! What about hanging it with a branch from outside? I think it should be hung where anyone can see it. The boys are going to LOVE seeing their names on it.

What a fabulous idea! I did a family tree quilt a few months ago for my parent’s 60th wedding anniversary. I searched the web for weeks trying to find a quilted family tree that was all free motion – I couldn’t find anything! I love the apples idea! I put all of the names in the branches but I have to say. . . apples might have been a little more tidy 🙂
I put a hanging sleeve on their quilt but I really like the idea of framing!

You are so creative! and this quilt is awesome. Although you may think your niece is getting this quilt- she may have to put it under lock and key to prevent it from wandering… to my house!
As I explained to one of my coworkers, you are an artist and I am a “copier”. (Same friend thinks I am creative but she is the one that made a blue soft sculpture turkey for Thanksgiving – her sister put a bag on its head and they still laugh about it every year.)
