A Family Tree Quilt
Good Morning, Quilters and Quilt-Lovers,
Today I offer a sneak-peek of a Christmas present I am making for my niece and her husband.
I was inspired by the Woodgrain motif in Molly Hanson’s new book:
Free Motion Quilting for Beginners and those who think they can’t (There’s still time to enter yesterday’s Giveaway!)
Tuesday’s Tutorial was Woodgrain.
Woodgrain can be used to add texture to any quilt and is very “au courant”.
With Winter upon us, I was inspired by the leaf-less trees in our yard.
Today’s small quilt includes my niece and husband’s wedding date along with the birthdates of their boys.
(As you can imagine-it’s a very busy house!)
I think I will frame this quilt…
Or maybe a simple binding and give her a wooden bowl for apples on her table…
What do YOU think?
Signed,
Lori Appleseed
NOTE-This quilt was stitched on Robert Kaufman Kona cotton with Sulky 40 wt Rayon on top and 50wt Aurifil in the bobbin. 50 wt Aurifil was also used on top to stitch the background leaves, etc. This was stitched on a domestic sewing machine, a Bernina 150 without a stitch regulator.

Simply exquisite Lori, and such a beautiful idea. Xxx
You are amazing!
I think that is absolutely lovely Lori. I am so tempted to try for both my daughters and their families but it is ‘too aspire to’ for next Christmas maybe! I really must do more practice. If I did manage the ‘tree’ my FMQ writing is abysmal and would spoil the whole effect! Mmm – maybe a mix of FMQ and embroidery machine writing…. Off to plan 🙂 – thanks Lori for even more inspiration
Toni
It’s so beautiful I think it should be framed. What a great gift!
Framing it will enable it to be enjoyed by so many! And as the family grows up, you could add extra appliqué apples for names/ grandchildren …lol
Oh my, this is lovely. What a great idea, and you have the expertise to carry it out. Frame this.
You are truly an inspiration. Thank you so much for all you share.
That’s a really neat gift idea & the woodgrain is inspiring…thank you!
Your posts this week have been quite timely for me. Just started
working on a quilted banner that will prominently feature a tree.
Couldn’t be better timing. Thank you!
this is a fantastic little quilt Lori- I am really wowed with what you did with woodgrain- it is such an excellent stitch and really adds something special to certain things- Just love this!!
Thank YOU Molly for your great Woodgrain ideas. Congratulations on your new book–it’s sure to be a winner!
You did such wonderful quilting Lori, it’s lovely!
What a great idea and a wonderful gift, you are just awesome.
You are such an inspiration Lori. Someday I will be able to quilt like that, at least in my dreams. I would hang that so it could be admired by all.
Thank you for all you do!
There is so much beauty in this design. Thank you for sharing. It really helps me move beyond meandering…with more confidence.
I love this elegant Family Tree. What a fun way to capture our large family. Nana Walker
Lori, this is exactly why I am a new convert to free motion quilting: being able to do something PERSONAL with my quilting. Thank you for this one. It’s a have-to project for several of my extended family members. Thank you.
You did a fantastic job on it!!
What an awesome idea…I love it!
Love what you did!
That is fabulous! That will make such a wonderful gift and you did such a nice job with the quilting.
This makes me wish I was your relative!. You could quilt something special for me any time. It is sure to be a favorite gift for your niece. It;s lovely.
What a great idea!
Very nice and so cute. I would hang it with a sleeve from a cute little wood apple quilt hanger. Although since I made Mom’s little table quilt for her birthday just a couple days ago I am in love with those little quilts on the table. 🙂 Now you got my head thinking up quilt hangers. LOL!
So sweet Lori ~ a lovely gift!
This is just the sweetest idea! I really love it! I wish I could borrow your creative side of your brain for just a bit, but that is why you have this blog…thanks for sharing with us all and not just keeping it for yourself!
I love arrangements where the quilt is hung over a table and the items on the table coordinate with the quilt–so I”d go with the wooden bowl and apples approach.
Your niece, and her family, are going to love this gift…I’d definitely frame it so it can be displayed for all to enjoy 🙂
This is so remarkable! Your creativity never ceases to amaze me – your posts are a joy I look forward to!
I love this idea. Thanks for sharing it.
Great idea ffor a family quilt. I guess grandkids would be “acorns” !
That’s a fab Family Tree Lori.
Just beautiful! What about hanging it with a branch from outside? I think it should be hung where anyone can see it. The boys are going to LOVE seeing their names on it.
Love the branch idea
Wow!! You are amazing with your free motion quilting and a true inspiration to all of us who are trying to master this technique! Thank you for all your tutorials and helpful tips.
What a fabulous idea! I did a family tree quilt a few months ago for my parent’s 60th wedding anniversary. I searched the web for weeks trying to find a quilted family tree that was all free motion – I couldn’t find anything! I love the apples idea! I put all of the names in the branches but I have to say. . . apples might have been a little more tidy 🙂
I put a hanging sleeve on their quilt but I really like the idea of framing!
Wow! What a great idea. Your free motion lettering is great, mine not to good. Maybe you could do a lettering tutorial some time.
Julie. I plan to start lettering tutorials in January

^^ late to the party 😛
This is marvelous. I love it!
Creative, personal and perfect!! Beautiful quilting!
Lori, this is so cool! What a spectacular gift.
Lori,
You are so creative! and this quilt is awesome. Although you may think your niece is getting this quilt- she may have to put it under lock and key to prevent it from wandering… to my house!
As I explained to one of my coworkers, you are an artist and I am a “copier”. (Same friend thinks I am creative but she is the one that made a blue soft sculpture turkey for Thanksgiving – her sister put a bag on its head and they still laugh about it every year.)
Pat.
Lol! I think im going to redo it in green for Renee. You may get the brown one after all. Of course we cant forget the other kiddies!
What a perfectly splendid idea!!! I love it!!!
I love the family tree!
Beautiful! And a great way to use brown! Brown is so under rated.
Love it! What a fantastic gift you’ve made. Thanks for sharing.
