Wisconsin Quilt Expo 2019 Recap

September 12, 2019
Wisconsin Quilt Expo
Good Morning, Quilters!

Last week, Faye and I attended the fabulous Wisconsin Quilt Expo held every year during the week after Labor Day.  It is one of my favorite shows and this year was no exception!

Easy Machine Quilting

I taught two sessions of Easy Machine Quilting to  large classrooms of enthusiastic quilters. My goal was to convince quilters to quilt their own quilts and to provide easy techniques and motifs to help them on their way.

I also try to remind everyone that quilts with personal touches become heirlooms–not perfect quilts.

New Friends

Faye and I made a lot of new friends this year! We are always delighted when quilters introduce themselves! We learned about their special projects like the Days For Girls project.

New Ideas

We also met award winning quilter, Lisa Geisfeldt who will be sharing a few of her designs for upcoming Tuesday Tutorials!

Shopping

And of course, we went shopping!

Couldn’t resist a stack of Heather Givan’s Jot fabric.  (Windham Fabrics).  I LOVE back-to-school supplies in any form!

More Shopping

In addition, I bought a really cool watercolors panel from Hoffman, though I’m not sure what I’ll do with it…(Thanks, Barb!)

As well as a few other notions to try.

I blame YOU for this shopping–I have to do product testing after all!

A Wisconsin Repast

On our way home, we stopped in the Wisconsin Dells for dinner at The Sand Trap Bar and Grill.

We sat outside, overlooking the golf course. The weather was perfect, the service was excellent and the cheese curds were one delicious!

A great way to celebrate another successful show!

Our Dear Lady Lori.. you just keep on testing products… After all, we “need to know” !!!

The Wisconsin Quilt Expo sounds great! I just returned from the AQS Fall Quilt Show in Paducah, Kentucky & enjoyed it very much! I love all vendors as well as the quilts! One of my favorite parts is getting a chance to talk to the Quilter’s who have quilts on display. It’s fascinating to hear about the whole process from designing to the actual work and techniques used. You can learn a lot! It gets me excited to try some new techniques!

My highlight of the Wisconsin Quilt Expo was attending your class, meeting & chatting with you and having my picture taken with you! Ladies, Lori is as nice, funny, friendly and generous as you imagine her to be…thank you! Several years ago you inspired me to take the plunge and try and quilt. I ended up with some pretty amazing pot holders and table runners from my practice runs! I’ve progressed.

    Oh! I miss cheese curds!!!

One of my dear quilting friends moved from the state of WA to CA. Now I visit her about every other year and we attend the Road 2 California Quilt Show in Ontario, CA. It is a fabulous show with so many great teachers and quilters. We will take a couple of classes and go and a bus trip, in addition to shopping and viewing all the wonderful quilts. I am always interested to see the group entries for various quilt challenges. So interesting to see how each quilter approaches a topic in a different way.

You inspire me. A quilting buddy and l attend the Dallas quilt show every year and Houston every other. Thank you for your Insights. Learn a lot

My hubby (my enabler) and I are going to attend the Pacific Northwest Quilt Expo in Portland, Oregon, on September 24th. I CAN HARDLY WAIT!!!! We attended the show about 8 years ago, and it was fabulous. I’m always jazzed by stupendous quilt shows. They keep me interested and involved. Perhaps one year you’ll be involved and I’ll finally get to meet you. So glad you and Faye had a great time at the Wisconsin show. It must be a special joy for you to have at least one of your children getting so interested in an art in which you are so talented. Lucky lady, but then you know that.

    • Hi Maureen…I went to the show in PDX last year & it was amazing! Spent 4 hrs & still didn’t see everything; but my bag was so full of fabric, I had to stop! If you can, go to a small new shop in Troutdale called My Quilting Loft. The owner & her daughter are wonderful & you can see the beautiful waterfalls on the way there if you take Hwy 30 off I-84. I used to live in PDX so I try to return once a yr. This yr. will be in Nov.

  • Lori, it was great to meet you at the show and to be in your class. Very informative and inspirational. from a fellow Minnesotan – Winona.

  • I loved meeting you and your show. Thanks! Although I have quilted my own quilts for years, I’ve always used 50-wt thread. That is changing and I’m thoroughly enjoying the different weights! Thanks so much for enlightening me!

  • Oh that ink date stamp neutral fabric is Awesome! That fabric panel is also awesome! My, I need to go shopping and add some awesomeness myself!

  • Betsy Schneekloth

I’ll be interested to hear how you like the 73 foot. It’s on my list for my Q20.

  • Hello Lori
I was at the WI show Saturday only, busy life and sick dog😔 Beautiful show, I miss Nancy Zeiman!!

I was also in Madison to work the first water station of the WI Ironman. My nephew was participating in his 4 th Ironman. What an amazing adventure for him and me. I was at the first mile of the 26.2 mile race. These athletes were just coming off a 112 mile bike portion of the event, which got its start with a 2.5 mile swim in Lake Monona. Totally admire these people of all ages, sizes and abilities. My nephew finished in 10 hours 48 minutes an excellent time for a 54 year old non pro!

Also have a niece in Madison who is a super mom of a 17 year old autistic son. Caught up with her on Monday. We occupied a booth at Chic fill A for 3 hours, but that was a ok with the owner(my daughter )

So you see I have connections to WI and Madison lol

I am restricting my self from fabric purchases this year, 2019 moto: FINISH WHAT YOU HAVE ALREADY FABRIC FOR OR ALREADY STARTED!!!

Thank you for everything you do that motivates me to FINISH
    Donna

Donna–you are busy! I feel like I was good at the show—there was so much MORE that I WANTED to buy! LOL!
Love YOUR motto! Always good to finish!

Cómo me gustaría que aquí en Argentina se hicieran eventos así, gracias por tus múltiples enseñanzas. 👋👋👋💝l

    • A

Laura, Wouldn’t that be cool! Until then –we’d LOVE for YOU to come visit!
And that is the beauty of the internet….we can still learn from each other no matter where we live!

  • carol

so glad you were able to relax on your drive back…and thank you for the reminder that the quilt tops do not have to be perfect…an inspiration to attempt my own machine quilting…thanks for your many tutorials…and encouraging words

  • I atttended your class and got inspired to quilt my 10+ quilt tops They are not show tops but rather to be used and loved. Thank you for your inspiration

  • It was a great show!! So many beautiful quilts in the show!! And some great vendors!
I like the idea of fabrics, rulers, needles, etc as school supplies!!
Would you consider doing a sit/sew or hands on session at the expo?
    Love the fabrics you got!

  • Gayle O'Grady

I attended your class at this year’s Quilt Expo. In fact I attended your class at last year’s Expo too. You inspire me to let go of my free-motion fears and do something brave and spectacular with my quilting. I too spent way too much money, but I like to see and touch things and Expo is a great place to have exposure to everything.

  • Barbara Schumacher

Loved your class and got your book with so many great designs. Now I need to doodle.
